The case is of interest chiefly as a precursor to, and early parallel for, later poltergeist cases in which communication has been held with a purported spirit by means of raps. Such cases have been (as we shall see) surprisingly numerous, and it was through one of them – at Hydesville in 1848 – that the modern Spiritualist movement began.
