The case of USAT Delarof, 1945
Mar., 1945 Aleutian Islands. Aboard the US attack transport "Delarof," 14 sailors saw a dark sphere rise out of the ocean, follow a curved trajectory, and fly away after circling their ship. (Evidence 30). The above entry is from the Magonia Database, compiled by scientist Dr. Jacques Vallée. One of my current acitivities is to cross check this database and get more details on its cases. This case, two years before the press termed the expression "Flying saucer", seemed interesting and I have compiled some more information here.
Short summary
A radioman named Robert S. Crawford reported years later to a NICAP consultant a UFO sighting he witnessed with 14 other crewmen aboard the US Attach Transport ship Delarof, in March 1945 or summer 1945, depending on the sources. The event took place while the ship was heading back to Seattle, and was in the open sea past Adak.
An object went out of the water at about 1 mile of the ship, flew almost straight up, then made a turn and circles the ship 2 or 3 times, and flew away and disapeared. The flashes of light were seen where it disappeared.
The object was described as "dark against the sunset", and of circular shape, with a size estimated by Crawford as of 150 to 250 feet in diameter.
Gunmen were on full alert but did not shoot. The captain of the ship maintained the alert as long as the ship was in the sector, but nothing else happened.
In addition to the report files by the NICAP consultant who heard the story from Robert S. Crawford, Dr. James E. McDonald, atmospherics physicist and well known scientist involved in UFO research, interviewed him again in 19

Since ancient times, the vast Lake Baikal has been known as deeply mysterious, but in the closing years of the Soviet era, and since, it has been the location of a number of alleged sightings of aliens and UFOs. Initially these were covered-up by the authorities of the USSR, but later they were revealed by the Russian media.
In recent days there have been unconfirmed reports in Russia that American director Steven Spielberg is planning a documentary based on these weird and unexplained accounts. At the time of writing, this appeared to be a hoax, though it was unclear who planted stories in the Russian media.
True or not about Spielberg's interest, the lake is perhaps the biggest focus of UFOs in Russia.
The versions of extra-terrestrial activity at Baikal - edged by mountains and containing one-fifth of the world's unfrozen freshwater - relate to supposed aliens seen by military divers in its depth, and large 'spaceships' hovering over its grey, moody expanses. Some of the images here show what two photographers claimed were UFOs buzzing the lake, while others are mock-ups from NTV based on descriptions of an incident at Kudara-Somon, in Buryatia, exactly a quarter of a century ago. A number of sightings also indicate bright 'cigar-shaped' objects in the sky flying over Baikal, as in the top picture.
NTV channel mock-up of 'flying saucer' based on accounts by residents of Kudara-Somon village in 1990
A case for which there were no images, but an intriguing description, occurred at Kurma, Irkutsk region, in 17 April 1987. The words that follow are from Valery Rudentsov, a local resident of nearby Shida village:
'There was 13 of us. At about 12.20am, one of our guys went out into the yard, a few seconds later runs, and calls all of us out. He stood in the centre of the yard and pointed his finger at the sky.
'Diagonally from his gesture - 150 metres above us - hung a huge flying saucer. From the centre of the plate went a phosphorescent purple ray. And at the edges of the plate were yellow portholes, almost like in our rural houses. The diameter of the plate was 70 metres. We saw it so clearly and for a long time, someone even suggested he throw a stone at it ...
'The weather was amazingly quiet, no sound was heard from the hanging saucer, although behind us was the village of Kurma - there was the noise of a dog barking, the lowing of cows. We were spellbound.
'It was a full moon and the visibility was so clear that no one of us could doubt the reality of what we saw. And then the plate slid smoothly away, sailed along the shore of the bay and further slipped into the hills of Olkhon. Neither before nor after have I ever met such a thing.
'But since that time it has been a kind of sacrilege to me - not to believe in UFOs. My friend Alexander, a hunter, and his colleagues who lived there for 20 years, often see UFOs - and all is fine, he is still alive. So if to speak about glowing balls or 'cigars', we constantly see these on the shores of Lake Baikal. They exist.'
The case highlighted by NTV channel was on 16 May 1990 in the village of Kudara-Somon, in Kyakhtinsky district, some 300 km from Ulan-Ude, capital of the Republic of Buryatia.
Margarita Tsybikova recalls the UFO's visit to Kudara-Somon. Marina Zimireva shows where the 'flying saucer' landed
Olga Fedorova, a local resident, recalled: 'At some moment everything turned yellow. My daughter came home from school. I looked - her face was yellow.'
The explanation soon became clear, according to accounts from villagers. Vasily Timofeev spoke of a flying saucer. 'Its diameter was around 30 meters, it shone brightly. But I did not see a clear image of metal or something like this.'
Another resident Margarita Tsybikova said: 'From this dish came down people in shiny, shimmering costumes.' Olga explained: 'There were people, as far as I remember, three people in shining yellow suits. Seems there were people, yes.' Marina Zimireva, who also says she witnessed this extraordinary sight, said: 'It was some kind of circle, it can be said, it was like a disk. It turned on the edge and and, well, windows were visible.
'I personally decided for myself that they were people. They had some human image. They were the same - straight, slender, they had arms and legs. And their gait was the same as ours. A little lower down there were three in orange suits. They went down from the disk like a man - the steps were very visible.' Then, as they recounted the strange event, the 'aliens' saw the people watching them. They returned to their spaceship and flew away.
Nikita Tomin

The chairman of the Union of Photographers of Buryatia, Sergey Konechnykh
Game warden Gennady Lipinsky also recalls seeing a UFO. 'When I saw it, it was flying low. Until it disappeared over the horizon, I kept looking at it. I call it a fireball, and what it really was - I cannot know.' The chairman of the Union of Photographers of Buryatia, Sergey Konechnykh, Ulan-Ude, was quoted about a much more recent incident, on 9 July 2009, at around 10pm. 'My son and I went out to the balcony, to see the last of the waning sunset. Suddenly there appeared these two glowing points and they hovered over the water.'
His pictures of this incident are clear yet perhaps raise as many questions as they answer. They show two glows in the night sky, featuring a yellow core with an orange-red surround. By his account, the mysterious crafts rose and rebased elsewhere on Baikal's surface. Around the same time, Anna Vinogradova, recalled a different but equally strange sight on the water. 'We were standing with tents on the beach and at night we saw orange-red flashes, as if a huge fires,' she said. At Listvyanka in July 2010, a picture taken by Nikita Tomin, shows three green-shaded lights on a UFO flying above the lakeside resort in Irkutsk region.
The chairman of the Union of Photographers of Buryatia, Sergey Konechnykh shows the pictures he made in July 2009
'It flew right above us, very low. The object was shining down on us with a green light. We were a bit scared,' he said. But the accounts also include 'aliens' in the deep waters of Baikal. Interestingly, unlike several other Siberian lakes, Baikal is not seen as home to a Loch Ness-style monster, but rather boasts space-like aliens under its murky surface.
For example, Vyacheslav Lavretevich, a rescuer, recalled an incident but did not give the date. 'We were on a yacht on Lake Baikal, and from under us flew out a huge glowing disk. It blinded us, and for a second flew into the sky. 'We did not even have time to grab any cameras, nor take video, although many of us saw it. It was a huge - and lit up all of our yacht. In diameter it was probably 500-700 metres, a huge disk. 'For three minutes it shone from below (the surface), and then abruptly departed in a second. The spectacle was huge, awesome. Beautiful, and shocking.'
Vyacheslav Lavretevich, a rescuer, recalled an incident on Baikal
Oleg Chichulin saw strange objects near Cape Svyatoi Nos
In 1977 two researchers named V Alexandrov and G Seliverstov, were in a submersible device at a depth of 1200 metres in the lake and observd strange lights
Oleg Chichulin was also on a boat, training students. Near Cape Svyatoi Nos they saw strange objects. 'There was a ball that glowed. And then this ball started to fade, fade and blush. And it turned into a red ball. This red ball for a while lay on the water, and then began to sink. And all this gradually, gradually went under the water. And it became dark.' Yet there are even more intriguing accounts of underwater aliens in the vast lake.
In 1977, when Leonid Brezhnev ruled the Kremlin, two researchers named V Alexandrov and G Seliverstov, were in a submersible device at a depth of 1200 metres in the lake. The researchers turned off their spotlights, to explore the depth of penetration of sunlight into the water. Suddenly the scientists were bathed in light from an unusual 'glow'. Aleksandrov recalled: 'It was so like if our device was lit from above and the side by two strong spotlights. Only a minute later, unknown floodlights went out, and we found ourselves in total darkness.'
'I have hundreds of drawings with these 'Sons of the Sky', told Alexey Tivanenko
In 1982, seven military divers were reported to have come across aliens under the waters of Baikal. Alexey Tivanenko, a doctor of history, said: 'At a depth of 50 metres, they met swimmers, around three metres tall, dressed in tight-fitting silvery suits. They did not have any scuba or other devices, just helmets on their heads.
'They received an order to catch the Ihtiander (half-boy, half-shark, from modern Russian folklore) - but they were immediately washed ashore with signs of decompression. 'They had two decompression devices, but one was broken. All seven people could not be put inside, so they put only four of them. And those three people, who were not put in the device, died on the beach.' Tivanenko has likened the descriptions to ancient petroglyphs seen by some as being aliens visiting Earth. 'I have hundreds of drawings with these 'Sons of the Sky',' he told NTV. 'They are united by the fact that all of them are tall, dressed in suits, all with the helmets on their heads. And there are mechanisms used by astronauts today.'
Reports surfaced several days ago in the Russian media that Spielberg was expected at Baikal in May, and that he intends to make a documentary entitled Depth 211. Citing the 'press service' of MUFON - the Mutual UFO Network, a US-based organisation that investigates UFO sightings - news source infobaikal.ru and others reported his trip. Yet there was no confirmation from the Hollywood director, who has made such films as Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, would be arriving, nor further detail on the reported project. Later, Komsomolskaya Pravda and IA Teleinform denied the reports but without quoting any sources close to the director.

What hides beneath the waves of the sea? Or under the water surface of a lake? It is usually claimed that we humans know more about the surface of the moon than about what is hidden on the bottoms of the world. It is related to what you can see with the naked eye.
By Anders Berglund
If you want to see with your own eyes what can be hidden in the depths, you have to dive. An often dangerous and expensive activity that should be left to the professionals. That lakes and seas have become places of mystery is not so strange when you think about it. Here we will take a little look at Lake Baikal - one of Russia's largest lakes where UFO phenomena have become part of the lake's mystique.
Lake Baikal in southern Siberia is the world's deepest lake. The average depth is 730 meters and the greatest depth has been measured up to 1,642 meters. Lake Baikal is also the world's largest freshwater lake by volume, around 25 percent of all fresh surface water on earth is collected here. Over the centuries, many legends and myths have arisen around Ozero Baikal, which is its Russian name.

According to local folklore, the lake is supposed to be bottomless and its waters are in constant connection with all the world's seas, lakes and rivers. And somewhere far down in the dark depths a silver castle gleams. According to Siberian and Mongolian mythology, it is the abode of the underground death god Erlik-Khan.
One of the "evidence" presented to show that something mysterious is happening in the lake is a picture taken from the International Space Station "ISS" on April 25, 2009. It shows a "saucer circle" in the western part of Lake Baikal and another a little further east out. In fact, they are natural phenomena that also occur on Swedish lakes from time to time.
Map of Baikal from National Geographic 1992
Aleksej Tivanenko is a Russian writer who collected historical observations of UFO phenomena in the area around Lake Baikal. Among other things, he has sought out early Russian press clippings. In "The Irkutsk Chronicles" by NS Romanov from 1886, one can read, among other things, about a giant glowing sphere that was seen over Baikal by many people. According to Romanov, the globe must have had many openings, or valves, on its surface.
From the beginning of the 20th century, when the Trans-Siberian railway was built along southern Lake Baikal, there are several UFO reports from Russian ralliers. What was seen across the lake resembled strange globes with rotating searchlights.
In the book Russia's USO Secrets by Paul Stonehill & Philip Mantle (2016) it is written about several UFO sightings over Lake Baikal. A very spectacular sighting is said to have occurred during the night between May 17 and 18, 1964. From a military installation by the lake, a flaming orange orb could be seen descending over the lake. The orb was described as being as large as the sun in the sky but not as dazzling. The sighting of the orb had been preceded by a peculiar glow at dusk. The glow was spread over a large area and was unlike any known weather phenomenon. It was thought that the taiga over the horizon was on fire.
At night, the military post was hit by electronic interference as the orb came closer. They suspected that they were under attack and ordered full combat readiness. According to the authors, the observation is still unsolved today.
Ufologist Mikhail Gehrstein on Russian TV
In the fall of 1965, a glowing cigar-shaped object, leaving behind a trail of condensation, was observed flying over Lake Baikal. Several small orbs of different colors were detached from the object, which moved away at the same speed as the object but in different directions. In Stonehill & Mantle's book, several other UFO sightings around Lake Baikal are described that one would have liked to know more about.
Lake Baikal is also said to be the site of a rather incredible story where several divers are said to have died after coming into contact with strange creatures. The story should not have involved an unidentified flying object, but rather a sudden encounter with what in the UFO context is usually described as humanoids.
In the summer of 1982 , Soviet military frogmen performed diving exercises in Lake Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan. The exercises were visited by celebrities. A major general, who was also the commander of diving units within the Soviet engineering forces, came for an inspection. He also had a warning with him. He told the officers on site what had happened during a similar exercise in Lake Baikal.
There at Baikal, the divers had come across something peculiar in the water. At a depth of 50 metres, they had met what they first thought were other divers. On closer inspection it had been seen that they were not people at all but human-like creatures. They were close to three meters tall and despite it being so cold down there, they had only been wearing thin silver tights. They also had no diving equipment as far as could be seen. On their heads they would have had globe-like helmets.
The encounter in the depths demanded an answer. A plan was drawn up. A special unit of seven divers was sent down to set a trap for the creatures. But when you tried to draw a net over a creature, it fought back. Some kind of force discharge took place and the seven divers were pushed, as if from an explosion, through the water at high speed right up to the surface. Such a rapid ascent caused decompression sickness, or so-called diver's sickness, in the divers. A condition resulting from the formation of bubbles in the body due to the drop in pressure which can lead to paralysis and death.
And the story of the divers must have ended tragically. They did not have access to more than one pressure chamber (a specially constructed chamber where pressure corresponding to a depth of 50 meters could be simulated). Four of the divers were squeezed into the chamber, which was only intended for two. The result was that three of the divers are said to have died. The fourth diver, and the three who did not get a place in the chamber, became invalids for life.
Made up history ?
The mysterious divers in Lake Baikal is an exciting story. But is it true? On the Internet, the searcher can find many different descriptions and versions of what happened. But you cannot find either the date, time or names of those who are supposed to have been there. The basic story is also retold in the third hand. For the source-critical ufologist, all of this is a sure sign that any truth content should be taken with a grain of salt.
Today we also know that the alleged tragic underwater encounter in Lake Baikal is a hoax. And we also know who invented it. The Russian ufologist Mikhail Gehrstein, who investigated the claims surrounding the divers, tells UFO-Sverige that the story originally came from journalist Mark Steinberg at the newspaper Novoe Russkoe Slovo, which is an American newspaper in Russian.
Steinberg claimed that he had been on the dives at Issyk-Kul and thus found out what had happened at Lake Baikal. In 1992, several Russian military authorities even published an official denial of Steinberg's claims in the Russian press. It simply had never happened. "I don't know why this story is still alive outside of Russia," Gehrstein writes to UFO-Sweden.
CONCLUSIONS

One area of the greater UFO phenomenon that doesn’t seem to get as much attention as others is that of what are called USOs, which stands for “Unidentified Submersible Objects” or also “Unidentified Submarine Objects.” In such cases we have strange craft traveling beneath the waves through the water, and at other times seen to spectacularly enter the water or erupt from beneath, suggesting that these things are just as at home in the sea as they are in the skies above us. Here we will look at a collection of such exceptionally weird cases, pointing at an underseas dimension to the UFO phenomenon that has largely been ignored, but which has been gaining greater attention in recent years.
Our first odd report comes from 1947, off the coast of Malta. In June of that year, a fishing vessel was about 20 miles off the southern coast, engaged in the routine business of pulling in their nets. As the nets came up, one of the crew alerted the others to something strange bobbing about out on the water’s surface, which appeared to be what they described as a “black submarine” floating about in the waves. It was an unsettling enough sight that the crew finished hauling in their nets and went about starting up the engines to get out of there, and at that moment there was a bright flash of light from the anomalous black shape. This light was bright enough to illuminate the object and the surrounding vicinity, showing it to be smooth, black, and metallic, and there were also small figures now visible upon it, which seemed to be wearing some type of apparatus around their waists and were described as “little men.” As the frightened fishermen looked on, these diminutive figures, described as about the size of 10-year-old children, seemed to scramble into the craft, after which it began to glow so brightly that they could barely look directly at it. The object then quickly submerged and disappeared under the waves to not be seen again.
There are several similarly strange cases of UFOs entering or exiting the ocean from the 1970s. One of these comes from a reader submitted report to the site UFO Casebook, and apparently transpired in January of 1971 off the coast of Puerto Rico. The witness claimed that he frequently surfed, and that he and other surfers would often see strange things beneath the waves, glowing objects that would shoot about through the water at high speeds. One particularly interesting account would happen one morning, of which he says:
On one occasion, around 6.30. A.M. that is the best time to surf by the way, several silver-colored objects came out of the water about half a mile from where we were waiting to catch a wave. These objects were round and hovered in one position, then they took off straight up at a speed that I cannot explain, but they disappeared so fast it was incredible. About a half hour later, the objects came back, I think it was around 6 or 7 of them, and went into the ocean. We never reported it to anybody, we just thought it was a military practice or other things that we did not know about. This all happened in the year of 1971, January, I do not remember the exact date. I am only reporting this one event but we had many more sightings of this kind since we surfed in the west coast of Puerto Rico. By the way, this event happened in Rincon in a beach known to surfers as Tres Palmas, and there were about 8 to 10 surfers that day.
In 1973, we have the case of a UFO that seems to have come down to enter Rainbow Lake, in New Hampshire, in the United States. According to The Derry News, on October 4, 1973, several local residents saw multiple bright objects in the sky over the lake, “yellowish in color,” which hovered over the water. The size of the objects was given as several feet in diameter, and then one suddenly came down to crash into the waves while the other one shot straight up into the sky.
The East Derry Fire Rescue Squad was notified, and actually sent a boat to search the lake, but nothing could be found. Whatever the objects were, they were apparently seen by numerous witnesses throughout the area, as the police department would receive a deluge of over 40 calls about them, which were persistent enough in insisting that something had come down into the lake that a team of divers was subsequently sent in. A follow-up report would read:
At the request of Chief (redacted), two divers descended into Rainbow Lake Friday afternoon in an attempt to resolve reports of an unidentified flying object that three witnesses claim splashed into the lake on Oct. 2. The divers swept the silty lake water with powerful searchlights, but their vision was impaired by the murky water, and they could not see more than a few inches ahead at any time. Said one of the divers, “The only way they’re going to get anything out of that lake is if they drag it. Chief (redacted) said he has no plans to drag the bottom and considers the matter closed.
A very weird series of events would play out in 1977 in the vicinity of Mayaquez, Puerto Rico, the country’s third largest city, where there was much talk of two massive glowing objects that would on many occasions enter and exit the ocean. It happened in September of that year, with a report of the two UFOs passing over the city to head out about a half a mile off shore and drop down into the water in a controlled manner. These two objects would on several occasions exit and then enter the water again, all while an estimated one thousand people looked on in astonishment. Many of them were superstitious, and were overcome by an intense terror that the world was coming to an end.
One fisherman named Rafael Lopez and his half-brother, Arturo Rivera, were out in their boat that day and got a good look at the object coming down into the ocean, and he would explain:
It just appeared close to us. We didn’t see where it came from. We just all of a sudden noticed it close to us in the water, and when we first saw it, it looked small, and then it seemed to grow very large. In the beginning we weren’t afraid. We were glad because we thought there was another boat coming close to us. Then we realized it wasn’t a boat and we started to get frightened. We were hearing a sound like a cricket screeching. I had the impression it was a cricket inside the boat. I’ve had crickets in the boat before and all you have to do is pound on the sides of the boat and they usually shut up. But as much as we pounded, it didn’t quiet. It kept on making sounds.
As long as we didn’t move, the object stayed steady in the water and seemed to get smaller and then larger. And when it got larger, it got much brighter and then it would change colors. When it would grow brighter, it would get from like yellow to an orange color. Then we got frightened and decided to leave. But the boat had run out of gasoline. We had a little bit of gas in a bottle but we were really nervous by that time. We were trying to get the cap off the motor to put the gasoline in and we couldn’t because we were real nervous. And all this time the object kept getting closer and closer to us and we were getting more and more nervous. We finally got the cap off, and it finally started and we were able to start toward the beach. Once I got to the beach, I wasn’t even able to stand up at first because I was trembling. My whole body was trembling. I was pretty shook up. When I got back to my house, which is very close to the beach, I started to watch the object again. This time it was moving around real fast. It would seem to disappear and reappear again at a great distance from where it had disappeared from, darting back and forth. I’ve been a fisherman for a long time and I’ve been out on that water for a long time and I’ve never seen anything like what I saw that night. In my opinion, it was a UFO, a flying saucer.
Other witnesses were reporting the same thing, with one of the mystery objects coming down into the water. One local by the name of Luis Baez would say of what he saw:
I was playing pool and someone said, ‘Look!’ I came outside with my pool stick and I see this thing. It was something nice to see. It was round looking, like an apple. Nice, round, beautiful. It went toward the beach. I put my pool stick away and went down to the beach and looked. A friend said, ‘That thing that’s waiting over there is not a fishing boat.’ I said, ‘Sure it’s a boat’ and he said, ‘It’s not!’ So then the one that came by overhead was coming down near the other one. They stayed like that for three or four minutes maybe a thousand yards apart. The bigger one, the one that was waiting, tipped on its side and BLOOM! Into the water! The small one stayed for a while. After half an hour or so I went up to the roof of this garage and laid down and watched. I wanted to make sure if it moved or not. And I could see this thing goes up… down… this way to the right, back again and a few times it went this way into the water. You could see the water flashing. It never went all the way down in the water. It did that a few times, it goes up, comes down, moved toward the beach but not too close and it goes back. At one o’clock in the morning I went home to sleep. I have to be up early in the morning. So I slept, went to work and when I come back I asked a few friends of mine what happened to the one that was up there. Well at three o’clock in the morning it disappeared. There were about a thousand people at the beach where he was.
As all of this was going on, police were making sure that no one else headed out onto the water, prohibiting any vessels from going out to investigate. While they were doing this, there would be sightings made by police officers as well, and one of these was Mayagüez Police Lieutenant Cesar Grácia, who would say of his own sighting:
I saw something in the sky that I didn’t know what it was. It was over Highway Two about fifteen hundred feet, a large, lighted ball about six feet in diameter. It was going toward the beach very slowly. I was in the parking lot of the Hilton when they called me from the police department. They told me to go to the beach because a great many people were watching this object. When I got there, the object was already hovering over the water about two or three miles off the beach. There were about five hundred people watching. There are about four public housing areas right there and all the people from the housing areas were there. I saw one light coming down but when I got to the beach I noticed there were two objects in the water, not together but about a mile away from each other. They were hovering over the water, right about at the water level.
Because of the distance I couldn’t tell if it was a few feet over the water or if they were actually touching the water. The first object stayed about an hour but the second one lasted at least four hours. I wasn’t able to stay because I had other obligations, but I was there for quite some time. Later I returned again and it was still going on. And I left once more. When the first one disappeared, I saw it go. When the second one disappeared, I was no longer there. I stopped more than one time that evening for maybe five minutes at a time to watch. I couldn’t say exactly that it hadn’t moved but it was more or less in the same area. There were maybe five hundred people in the area where I was watching and all along the whole coast there were other people watching. A group of officers on duty that night also saw it, between five and ten. We called the Coast Guard but the Coast Guard didn’t come. The answer they gave us was that the police had to verify it first, that if there was a real emergency then the Coast Guard would be dispatched.
Other police officers would see the UFOs as well, and the whole area was experiencing a bit of a mass hysteria at the time. One Police Sergeant Ramirez would describe what he saw as follows:
I saw people gathering along the beach so I stopped my car. I was very curious, not only because there were people there but also because they were looking up. So I stopped and saw the light, which was very bright. When I got out of the car, I saw the object fall into the water, very bright and it like divided. It was pretty high, like an orange-yellow light. I don’t know exactly the size. As it came down it got larger. It was pretty good sized. First one sank into the water. About twenty seconds after, the other one went into the water also. It zigzagged a little before it went down and turned off. That was about nine thirty. I stayed around to keep traffic moving and see what the people were doing in case there was an accident or anything. Word got around and there were over a thousand people watching these things. People came out of their houses to see the view and people came in cars, parked on the side of the street and went to the beach to see what was happening. I stayed until midnight, mostly keeping an eye on the group so there wouldn’t be any problems. The police got many, many phone calls, all night. We called the Coast Guard but they didn’t come. They said it wasn’t an emergency.
There were numerous other reports along these lines, yet oddly the Coast Guard did little to act, and it seems like it was all mostly swept under the carpet. What was going on here and why were these objects repeatedly entering and leaving the ocean? We may never know. In 1990 another strange incident occurred in Turkey on the coast of the Aegean Sea. The encounter was reported by a Mr. Erol Erkmen, who was wreck diving with a friend at a site at 57 meters deep in the Saros Bay at approximately 2 PM. At one point they looked ahead to see a greenish glow in the water, which seemed to be emanating from an orb of light that appeared to be circling them and maneuvering around them. They observed it for around 3 minutes, during which time Erkmen took a photo with an underwater Kodak camera, which the object seemed to realize because it then went dark. Shortly after this, low oxygen forced the two divers to head to the surface. Upon examination, Erkmen would say that his photo had managed to capture a greenish glowing disc-shaped object, although what it is he cannot say.
Finally, we have a recent case from 2012, from Panama Beach Florida in a report filed with MUFON. On July 15 of that year, the witness says she was sitting out on the patio of her beachside residence where she was throwing a party, watching the sunset when she observed something very strange out in the water near the horizon. She explains:
I was sitting on my patio watching the sunset. On the horizon I saw this object that looked like it was coming out of the ocean. I made a comment to my customer to look. No one could figure out what it was. By now there are about 30 people outside looking. It came straight up out over the water very slowly, and made no sound. It was round looking and like it had windows with red lights in the middle and one solid white light under the bottom; they did not blink, but they were bright. When it got over the land it continued for another 7 to 10 minutes. It was almost dark. We wanted to get a picture but no one had a camera. One of my workers did take a picture with his cell phone but it just looked like a light and we could not make it out. Then the object took a right turn and flew for another 3 or 4 minutes, then in matter of seconds it was gone.
The phenomenon of these reports of UFOs entering and exiting the water are far rarer than those of the more conventional type, yet they add a layer of mystique to the lore of UFOs that is very intriguing to say the least. It hints at the possibility that these mysterious objects are not only using our skies, but also beneath the surface of our lakes and seas for inscrutable purposes we may never understand, and it all only furthers the mystery of UFOs in general, pushing it out into the far realms of the odd.
Russian Navy UFO Records Say Aliens Love Oceans
The Russian navy has declassified its records of encounters with unidentified objects technologically surpassing anything humanity ever built, reports Svobodnaya Pressa news website.
The records dating back to soviet times were compiled by a special navy group collecting reports of unexplained incidents delivered by submarines and military ships. The group was headed by deputy Navy commander Admiral Nikolay Smirnov, and the documents reveal numerous cases of possible UFO encounters, the website says.
Vladimir Azhazha, former navy officer and a famous Russian UFO researcher, says the materials are of great value. “Fifty percent of UFO encounters are connected with oceans. Fifteen more – with lakes. So UFOs tend to stick to the water,” he said.
On one occasion a nuclear submarine, which was on a combat mission in the Pacific Ocean, detected six unknown objects. After the crew failed to leave behind their pursuers by maneuvering, the captain ordered to surface. The objects followed suit, took to the air, and flew away. Many mysterious events happened in the region of Bermuda Triangle, recalls retired submarine commander Rear Admiral Yury Beketov. Instruments malfunctioned with no apparent reason or detected strong interference. The former navy officer says this could be deliberate disruption by UFOs. “On several occasions the instruments gave reading of material objects moving at incredible speed. Calculations showed speeds of about 230 knots, of 400 kph. Speeding so fast is a challenge even on the surface. But water resistance is much higher. It was like the objects defied the laws of physics. There’s only one explanation: the creatures who built them far surpass us in development,” Beketov said.
Navy intelligence veteran, Captain 1st rank Igor Barklay comments: “Ocean UFOs often show up wherever our or NATO’s fleets concentrate. Near Bahamas, Bermudas, Puerto Rico. They are most often seen in the deepest part of the Atlantic Ocean, in the southern part of the Bermuda Triangle, and also in the Caribbean Sea.”
Another place where people often report UFO encounters is Russia’s Lake Baikal, the deepest fresh water body in the world. Fishermen tell of powerful lights coming from the deep and objects flying up from the water. In one case in 1982 a group of military divers training at Baikal spotted a group of humanoid creatures dressed in silvery suits. The encounter happened at a depth of 50 meters, and the divers tried to catch the strangers. Three of the seven men died, while four others were severely injured. “I think about underwater bases and say: why not? Nothing should be discarded,” says Vladimir Azhazha. “Skepticism is the easiest way: believe nothing, do nothing. People rarely visit great depths. So it’s very important to analyze what they encounter there.”
Meanwhile Russian Navy officials have denied the collection of UFO-related encounters exists. A source in the Navy’s service staff said the story may have its roots in the reports of vessel commanders, which describe locating objects of unclear but Earthly origin.“An illusion of a UFO encounter can result from large fish shoals, floating garbage or natural phenomena,” ITAR-TASS news agency cites the source.
In October 2019, U.S. Navy Commander David Fravor, who was the subject of a New York Times article about his 2004 UFO sighting, discussed a spooky new sighting a fellow pilot revealed to him after they were both out of the Navy.
According to Fravor, the eyewitness was a former pilot of the MH-53E Sea Dragon, the Navy version of the Marine Corps’ CH-53E Sea Stallion, based at Naval Station Roosevelt Roads, on the island of Puerto Rico. Twice while recovering spent practice munitions out of the water, the pilot spotted a weird underwater object.
In the first incident, the pilot saw a "dark mass" underwater as he and his team retrieved a flying practice drone. The pilot described the object as a “big” mass, “kinda circular,” and he was certain it wasn't a submarine. In the pilot’s second sighting, a practice torpedo that the pilot was sent to recover was “sucked down” into the depths of the ocean in the presence of a similar underwater object. The torpedo was never seen again.
Elsewhere in the interview, Fravor reveals that a 79-year-old woman contacted him after his sighting went public. The woman explained that her father, a naval officer, was at one time based at the naval station in San Francisco in the 1950s. When she was a child, her father showed her a telegram that stated unidentified objects had been sighted going in and out of the water at a now forgotten set of latitude and longitude coordinates. The woman’s father told her, “We get these all the time, and it’s always in the same area.”
These sightings are similar to Fravor’s own sighting. According to the retired Navy pilot, the only reason he had seen the now-infamous "Tic Tac" UFO was because it was hovering above a mysterious larger object that was sighted underwater. Fravor describes the object as cross shaped and approximately the size of a Boeing 737 jetliner. He has further described the water above it as though it were "boiling" or "frothing," and said the object disappeared after it caught his attention.
In 1970, biologist Ivan Sanderson published the book Invisible Residents. Sanderson, a noted student of unusual phenomena, devoted the book to sightings of what were later called Unidentified Submerged Objects, or USOs. USOs are defined as unknown craft that are sighted in the water, sighted rising up out of the water, or diving into the water. Sanderson catalogued scores of reports of USOs:
On the 19th of April, 1957, crew members aboard the Kitsukawa Maru, a Japanese fishing boat, spotted two metallic silvery objects descending from the sky into the sea (original emphasis). The objects, estimated to be ten meters long, were without wings of any kind. As the hit the water, they created a violent turbulence. The exact location was reported as 31° 15’ N and 143° 30’ E.
Sanderson also reports an incident that reportedly took place off the coast of Puerto Rico in 1963 during an anti-submarine warfare exercise.
The maneuvers were conducted off Puerto Rico in the Atlantic some 500 miles southeast of the continental United States. All reports seem to agree that there were five “small” naval vessels concerned, but in more than one account the aircraft carrier Wasp is stated to have been the command ship…
A sonar operator on one of the small vessels, otherwise listed as a destroyer, reported to his bridge that one of the submarines had broken formation and gone off in what appeared to be pursuit of some unknown object. This operator did not, of course, know if this was a “plant”, since the maneuvers they were engaged in were exercises designed to train personnel in detection of enemy craft...However, this operator’s report was not all within the limits of any such simulation,. Trouble was that said subaqueous object was traveling at “over 150 knots”!
According to Sanderson, “no less than [13] craft,” including anti-submarine warfare patrol aircraft, tracked the high-speed, unknown object. Furthermore:
It is said that technicians kept track of this object for four days, and that it maneuvered round about, and to depths of 27,000 feet.
USS Wasp was indeed an anti-submarine warfare carrier in 1963 and served in the Atlantic Fleet until decommissioning in 1972. Unfortunately, Sanderson doesn't provide any sourcing for the incident nor is there any other information about it posted on the internet. The National UFO Recording Center maintains a database of sightings reported to the NUFORC, both by email and hotline. There are many reports of UFO-type objects seen coming out of or going into the ocean.
Off the coast of Half Moon Bay, California, an eyewitness reported that in 2007 she observed three UFOs while aboard the cruise ship Dawn Princess (renamed in 2017 Pacific Explorer.)
“After about 5 minutes, three softly glowing objects came into view – three uniform, nearly spherical objects, evenly spaced in a line parallel to the ship’s hull and hovering just above the water surface… They appeared to stay in one place while the ship moved past them. They were hovering, but didn’t disturb the water below them. Just as they went out of my sight, the left one (toward the bow) splashed down into the water and disappeared."
One report logged in April 2019 states that an object resembling a “small white boat” flew up out of the water near Imperial Beach, California, “at about [500] feet.” The object promptly “flew south at a very high rate of speed.” Whatever USOs are—figments of the imagination, mechanical malfunctions, secret government craft, or even the work of extraterrestrials—there's a long history of sightings. Fravor’s anonymous helicopter pilot is just the latest in a long line of mysteries.
New Navy Witness Says He Saw a “Tic Tac” Operating Underwater
For almost four years now, we’ve been talking about the USS Nimitz and its encounter with “Tic Tac” type objects. Now there’s a new wrinkle. It’s a sighting of what looked like the same type of object, seen from a Nimitz class supercarrier, only this unknown object was operating underwater. The USS Carl Vinson is the United States Navy’s third Nimitz-class supercarrier. It was first commissioned in 1982, deployed in 1983, and it’s famous for being the ship from where the body of Osama bin Laden was buried at sea in 2011. Since 2009, the ship has been the flagship for Carrier Strike Group One.
E-4 Petty Officer John Baughman served in the U.S. Navy from 2008 to 2013. In January 2010, he was stationed aboard the Carl Vinson, assisting in humanitarian aid to Haiti after an earthquake had destroyed a large portion of the country. A Gunners Mate, his job description called for him to “mount, stow, and secure all weaponry, repair and calibrate defense systems, maintain guided missile launching, rocket launchers, gun mounts and all other ordnance.” In other words, the job carries serious responsibility and is only given to serious people.
Working as an E2 Blue Shirt on the flight deck one day, he was dangling his legs off the SAM Launcher Deck on the Forward Starboard side of the ship, taking a small break. He’d often look for sea life when things were at ease. “I’d often see all kinds of wild stuff swimming and floating under and on the surface,” he says. “Everything from sharks, dolphins and whales to giant squids, sea turtles, and swordfish.”
Baughman stressed that he had grown accustom to identifying what was in the ocean and at what depths. “I had a pretty good reference point on how big or deep something was in the water, especially when you can see the water line on the side of the ship.” On this day, however, something caught his attention in the calm and clear water, unlike anything he’d ever seen before.
“I was staring into the water from above when a large, fat, white ’Tic Tac’ object, approximately twenty feet in length, suddenly appeared in my view below me, moving right and darted into the depths as fast as it appeared. I couldn’t really comprehend what I saw. It was definitely a solid object, but when it descended, its forward end rapidly collapsed in on itself and disappeared.”
Baughman reacted to this moment with disbelief and excitement. Feeling that it was an important observation, he told his work center supervisor about what he’d seen. Instead of a serious debrief or an instruction to file a report, he was met by a simple shrug of the shoulders. The supervisor said simply that “everyone sees weird shit in the ocean.”
So what could it have been? With an eerily similar description of the now-famous “Tic Tac” object sighted off the Nimitz and Princeton carriers in 2004, could it have possibly been something similar? And if so, were these oblong-shaped objects originating in the ocean?
Baughman is cautious in his conclusions. “It could have been just about anything,” he says. “Rapidly moving flotsam with a keen ability to completely disappear, very large albino shark or an albino whale. Could even be an optical illusion, but it cast its own shadow and that’s how I was able to perceive it as a solid object.”
To Baughman, it was clear that reporting such an incident probably wasn’t in his best interest from the response he’d been given. He avoided talking about it for many years to come. His thinking on the subject of coming forward began to change in 2017 when the 2004 Nimitz event became public. Just like many other Navy personnel who have encountered strange objects either in the water or in the skies, that event was a pivotal moment for many to finally step forward and speak out. Baughman draws a straight line from the courage he observed to his own decision to come forward now. “Alex Dietrich and Dave Fravor were initial motivating factors in my coming out with my sighting.”
While Baughman felt empowered to finally speak out with his sighting, many active military personnel are still afraid to do so. Still, not reporting could actually pose more or a threat. If these events aren’t being reported, whatever these UAP may represent are going to continue entering our restricted air and sea space with impunity.
“It’s hard to come to grips with something like this, and I still feel somewhat insecure about it because it doesn’t make sense. But at the same time, more data points, even as basic as my story, could help solve the mystery of whether they’re foreign adversaries playing mind games, non-human entities, or the myriad of other possibilities.”
Baughman hopes that the recent UAP report and follow-up memo from the Department of Defense will force the Pentagon to be more productive in working with civilians. He wants the open source intelligence communities to get to the bottom of these sightings, because regardless of who these belong to, he believes they can pose a threat or be manipulated into subverting our signals intelligence capabilities by capitalizing on the stigma associated with them.
As the stigma and ridicule often attached to reporting these anomalous events continues to dissipate, new reports like Baughman’s are going to become more common. By coming forward now, he’s showing the way for others, and taking us one step closer to finding answers, whether we like those answers or not.
