0310 - Wales - Testimonies
03 January 2012
British UFO researcher Peter Glynn contacted me earlier today about a unique piece of footage he was shown recently, having to do with a series of lights that appeared over an area called Crestwood, near Wales, United Kingdom. According to Peter, this is believed to be “a genuine sighting that cannot truly be explained at the moment.” According to Glynn:
The lights appear to be located either above the Crest Woods, in front of Crest Woods or just behind and above Crest Woods. This was filmed around 3 am. and lasted longer than 6 minutes. The witnesses are utterly reliable as they are not UFO fanatics. I admit that I am a bit of a UFO hunter. What makes this credible is the evidence of the boys. 3.00 am UK time on 3rd January 2012. Good film and good witnesses to an unexplained event. “It’s amazing,” one of the witnesses can be heard saying during the filming. “I can see the saucer.”
What are the origins of the object (or objects) in this video? Are they intelligently controlled, and though capable of being filmed, are there other variables in terms of what the witnesses were able to perceive with the naked eye, versus what the camera managed to capture? Also, despite the initial witness attempts to contact local news sources, were there others nearby who may have seen the strange objects over Crestwood?
I’ve asked Peter to pass along any further information he may have about the encounter as his investigation continues, and any results we receive will be posted here for consideration. In the meantime, what are your thoughts?
WE ARE not alone, suggest new UFO pictures taken in Denbigh last week. And the truth may well be out there.
On Wednesday February 1, Graham Evans from Denbigh was startled when a strange flying object suddenly appeared in the daylight sky as he was taking a photograph with his digital camera. “I was walking around Denbigh taking pictures of several locations for a video I was making and it was about 2.30pm when I reached Leicesters Church by Denbigh Castle,” said Mr Evans. I was just about to take the picture when an object suddenly appeared in the sky moving very quickly from left to right.”
Mr Evans also took pictures of a large light in the sky over Denbigh Castle in November 2009 and gave the same description about the object travelling “very quickly from right to left”. “It was a dark oval shape and it made no sound whatsoever, I would guess it was approximately 20 feet in diameter,” Mr Evans said. “As my camera was switched on and ready to take I managed to get one shot of it before it vanished in the distance, there was no one with me at the time to witness this strange event,” he added.
Scott Felton of Conwy UFO group believes the UFO picture is very clear and it is not a mark on the camera lens. “Most sightings are at night and it is unusual to have a clear day time sighting,” said Mr Felton. “It is small and from the angle the picture was taken it gives the impression it’s oval but it’s more a disc shape. “It seems to have a spinning top which is a standard regular flying disc shape,” he added.
Denbigh is a popular location for UFO sightings, and in 2009 three UFOs hovering over Denbigh were reported and described as large red lights about the size of the moon, and shortly after they flew off a fourth craft appeared in the sky. “There is a hot spot for sightings in this area and there is a Denbigh triangle where things have been seen,” said Mr Felton. Another UFO sighting was seen in Denbigh on January 3, 2012, and videoed by a family at their home at 3am. “Since two sightings have been seen and captured in the space of a month, it could possibly be the same UFO,” he said.
North Wales Police has revealed there was 13 official reports of UFOs from the public since 2004 until April 2011. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) department that investigated sightings within the UK closed in 2009 after 60 years, because investigating UFO sightings were “an inappropriate use of defence resources”. “The MoD has no opinion on the existence or otherwise of extra-terrestrial life,” said its statement. “However, in over 50 years, no UFO report has revealed any evidence of a potential threat to the United Kingdom,” added the MoD.

A Denbigh man has captured a strange light in the skies over the Clwydian Range on his camera. Graham Evans, spotted around light over the Clwydian Hills last week from his home in Denbigh. The unidentified flying object was spotted at 7pm on Friday, October 3. It was moving from left to right over the hills when it disappeared near the Moel y Parc mast.
Mr Evans said: “I spotted it from my top room. It was a really bright light about six miles away as the crow flies, moving from left to right. It was really strange, very bright and round. “It's not the first time I have seen something like that over the hills but it is the first time that I have managed to get it on camera.”
What do you think it is? Let us know on the Denbighshire Free Press Facebook page or on Twitter @DenbighshireFP.
UFO over Pontarddulais - 19 June 2017
David Pearce was outside the front of his house in Bolgoed Road, Pontarddulais at 10 pm and saw an object coming towards him from the west-north-west. It seemed to be a vertically-oriented short cylinder with a bright white light shining from beneath. It stopped and changed direction towards the south. David ran through his house to the back garden and managed to capture it on video. He ran up the garden to take more footage but the object had risen at an accelerated rate of speed and disappeared into cloud cover. The object made no sound.

Three lights descending from sky - 27 January 2011
Three UFO lights, one of them just hovering and the other two descending in Wales, Chepstow in the UK at daylight. Witness report: Bright lights in the sky, when the video finished 3 more lights descended from the clouds.
On January 19, 1983, many residents of Swansea and surrounding towns all saw Triangle UFO’s. Some saw only one object others saw two. The most consistent part is they all saw slow moving objects. This UFO case doesn’t only have a lot of people seeing it. The witnesses also saw the object(s) for a long period of time over residential areas.
The witness reports are extensive. The UFO research group S.U.F.O.N. has done a great job gathering material and interviewing witnesses. Many have been documented on paper, but S.U.F.O.N. has done a great job in recording some of the testimonies as well. I highly recommend checking them out. Be sure to head over to their site. They have a lot more interesting cases documented.

19 JANUARY 1983 – MUMBLES
Between 5.30 PM and 5.45 PM
For a period of 10 minutes, an observer watched with the naked eye and through binoculars, two very bright lights about the length of a Boeing 747 apart. No shape was discernible. The lights were over the ‘Lifeguard Station’, Mumbles [Lifeboat or Coastguard?] at 2000 feet maximum altitude, one mile away from the observer. Its movements were described as being steady, changing.

19 JANUARY 1983 – KILVEY HILL TO LLANDARCY
5.45 PM
Mrs. Margaret Gaskins, of Lucy Road, Skewen, said her children 14-year-old Leanne and 10-year-old Ceri were watching television when they spotted strange flashing lights in the sky at about 5.45 ppm.
“They came running into the kitchen full of excitement,” she said. “At first I didn’t believe them, but when I looked out of the window I could see a sphere of flashing lights which travelled from the Kilvey Hill area over to Baglan Bay.”
The whole family were hanging out of the windows of their flat for a better view and soon neighbours were also peering out.
“It was all very exciting,” said Mrs. Gaskins, “We couldn’t believe what we were seeing.”
“Later I heard that a Sea King helicopter from Brawdy had been in the area. At first, I thought the flashing lights must have been from that,” she said. “But then I was told the helicopter was not over Swansea Bay until 6.20 pm.”
“I don’t believe in UFOs. There has got to be a logical explanation for it, but I can’t explain what it was I saw.”

19 JANUARY 1983 – KILVEY HILL
Sometime between 5.45 PM AND 6.45 PM
An observer located outdoors on Pentregethin Road described seeing an object for 5-10 minutes moving slowly around a TV mast (presumably Kilvey Hill). It was described as being one object, split into two parts, 3 very bright flashing white lights at front and 3 at back. Massive in size, oblong in shape. No sound or smell.

19 JANUARY 1983 – MORRISTON TO KILVEY HILL
5.50 PM
Over a period of 6 minutes, an observer located on the road, Heol Tal-Y-Coppa in Llansamlet reported seeing two objects travelling at a steady rate west to east from the DVLC in Morriston towards Kilvey Hill. One object was a large elongated shape with two pulsating white lights at the front, and two yellowish steady lights on the rear. The second object was small and triangular with steady white lights. No sound or smell was associated with the sighting.

19 JANUARY 1983 – SWANSEA AIRPORT
5.55 PM
An “aircraft-shaped object” (moving far too slowly to be an aircraft) showing six lights at the front and three lights at the base, was seen over Swansea Airport, heading west over the Gower Peninsula.

19 JANUARY 1983 – LANDORE
Approximately 6 PM
The witness, a man (who did not give his identity) was in Cwm Level Park, Landore and saw a black triangular craft, which displayed lights, hovering over the Morfa area, to his south-east. It was low, and he was looking slightly down to it as the park is located at a higher level. It was about the size of a bus. The witness said it was just above roof-top height and was drifting slowly.

19 JANUARY 1983 – KILLAY
APPROX. 6 PM
Roland Betts – a long distance lorry driver from Killay, Swansea – had just uncoupled his trailer and was in Dunvant Road, high up on a hill, with a sweeping view of Swansea Bay, at around 6 pm.
“As I got out of my vehicle, I was attracted by a large area of stars that were blocked out. There was a massive round object; I would guess at approximately 10-20,000 ft in the air. It appeared to have lights around the perimeter and was absolutely silent. If it was moving, it was moving very slowly. For some reason, it didn’t sink into my mind what it might be. I went into the house and told my wife that I had just seen an unidentified flying object in the sky. Imagine my surprise when she told me that a programme had just been interrupted by a news broadcast, relating to a UFO having been sighted between Swansea and Cardiff by many people!”

19 JANUARY 1983 – WINCHWEN
6 PM
Detective Sergeant Michael Troake, based at Morriston Police Station – was carrying out enquiries into a spate of burglaries in the Winch Wen area, with his colleague – DC Gethin James. They were about to get into the CID car, when they saw a cluster of lights approaching their position in the sky.
DS Troake: “What surprised me was the way in which the lights blocked out some of the stars, giving me an impression of an object that was long and rectangular in shape. As this massive, silent, transparent, object loomed overhead, I could see a number of blue flashing lights at its edges. All I could do was stand in awe, looking upwards, as this ‘thing’ – only about a hundred feet off the ground – headed slowly towards Swansea Bay.”
DC James – “It was the most incredible thing I had ever seen....bigger than two football fields and covered in blinding lights, although I could just make out a smaller object in the shape of a ‘V’ following behind.

19 JANUARY 1983 – SWANSEA TO GOWER
6 PM
Over a period of 10 minutes an observer in Llwynhendy watched two objects, long, one in front of the other, second object had a large red steady light on the front. Flashing white light in the centre and tail of both objects. It moved from the Swansea direction and then headed towards the Gower, at a steady, slow speed.
19 JANUARY 1983 – PORT TALBOT TO SWANSEA
6.05 PM
A silver-coloured, saucer-shaped object, showing four or five lights, flashing in a rotation, was seen motionless in the sky, over the steel works at 6.05 pm. A few minutes later, it was joined by a second UFO. The two of them moved off towards Swansea.

19 JANUARY 1983 – SKETTY
6.15 PM
Driving Instructor, Orllwyn Jones was leaving his house, 20 Long Oaks Avenue, Sketty, Swansea, to collect a pupil on a lesson. As he left the house, he suddenly became aware of a black triangular object, approximately the size of a family saloon car, slowly crossing the sky above the house next door.
The object was blacker (or darker) than the evening sky; had a small tube protruding downward from each corner and each tube had a small but bright light at the tip. The object had insufficient height (or depth) to be a manned craft, as it was no more than approximately 18 inches high. Any entity controlling the craft from within would have been lying flat.
The craft was so low that he estimated it was no more than a foot or so above the roof of the house next door. The object travelled at what Mr. Jones described as “a slow walking pace”, and made an audible ‘chugging’ sound as it crossed the road toward the houses opposite in a North West to South East direction (and toward Swansea Bay). He then stated that he braced himself for what he envisaged to be an inevitable crash, as the object was so low it was going to hit the roof of the house opposite his own.
However, this object seemed to adjust its height as necessary and simply skimmed over the roof opposite, missing the ridge tiles by a matter of inches. It then seemed to descend back down and below the level of the roof opposite, and out of Mr. Jones’ sight.
The witness stated that it was definitely a solid, tangible object, and was definitely under intelligent control of some sort. He wanted no publicity at the time and shared his experience with family only. His son, Phil Jones came forward only after the death of his father in 2012, and he kindly met members of SUFON in 2015 to share his father’s experience.
19 JANUARY 1983 – GORSEINON
6.15 PM
Brothers Milan and Byron Baljak, age 32 and 28 respectively, and friend Roger Williams, 32, were standing outside Gorseinon & District Working Mens Club on Brighton Road, Gorseinon, waiting for it to open to play snooker. Looking above them towards the east, a row of lights about 50 feet up came over the roofs of houses on the other side of the road (east of them). The lights were small, dim blue-white and numbered about a dozen and arranged in a line, moving from their left to right (south).
They realised that the lights were on the same object as it started to turn, and could see that it was a huge black triangle, with more blue-white lights along each side. Its size, Milan compared to two jumbo jets but was unable to estimate its thickness. As it turned, slowly drifting towards the east, and away from them, it tilted slightly, all the small bluey lights going off and they could make out a red circular light on the top of the object near the front apex. There was no sound and it just ‘floated’, slowly moving away from the witnesses, who then crossed the road to stand under it and followed it a short way down a side alley between the terraced houses on the left and a brick building on the right.
It moved away further in the direction of Penllergaer in the east and they watched as it disappeared out of sight. The duration of the sighting was about 5 minutes. The men returned to the club, talking about it to each other, Roger and Byron going inside to phone the local radio station, Swansea Sound, leaving Milan outside, who kept a look out in case the object returned.
Milan then saw two more black triangular-shaped craft, smaller than the first, and again about 50 feet up, one travelling one way down the road, and the other on a parallel but opposite course moving up the road. Again, no sound was heard, the objects displayed lights and reflected the glow from the street lighting. They did not rotate, and when they both reached a certain point after travelling half the length of the street, both reversed their course and passed each other again above him. They once more reversed and passed, stopped and slowly drifted off together to the south, over the shops in the main street at the bottom of the road.
Roger also phoned the South Wales Evening Post and was told that reports had come in from all over south Wales. Milan was so affected by what he had seen that when he went home later, he burned his entire collection of UFO books in the garden and went to sleep with blinds down and curtains closed. The following day, he said there was a tremendous amount of military aircraft flying around the area. He went to the Swansea Sound studio to talk about what he had seen that day.
19 JANUARY 1983 - UPLANDS, SWANSEA
Approximately between 6.30 PM and 8 PM.
Cold, clear night.
Natalie Bowden (aged 13 yrs 6 mths) lived at 38 Beechwood Road, Uplands, Swansea, which stands on the north side of the street, which runs east-west. Natalie was in the back room with her dog, watching TV and suddenly had a feeling that she should go out the front door. She did so, but the dog did not follow her and saw a huge object over the houses on the opposite side of the road.
She remembers a shape of lights on the underside of the object, which she compared to a stadium, which consisted of a ring, round or oval, which protruded below the craft. Large coloured square windows or panels of light were on the outer side of the ring, which constantly changed colour. She remembered these colours being creams, ochres and pinks and others, all soft hues iridescent and 'pearly'. The colours were pulsating rather than flashing. The outside of the ring was sloped rather than straight. She could not see in detail the body or shape of the whole craft due to the brightness of the ring, but it was large, covering the street. She assumed that it was circular, because of the ring of light beneath it [it is possible that the shape was triangular, as other witnesses of triangles on this evening have described a ring of light beneath the craft].
She was alone, to begin with, for about 5 minutes while the object was silently hovering 30 ft above the street, just above the houses opposite, and also covering the street. She called her sister (Ashley) and stepfather (Dave) out of the house. She remembers, too, that even though it was a cold winter evening, it wasn't cold during the time of the sighting, and it was perfectly quiet "you could hear a pin drop", she said. There was no sound from the craft and everything was completely still and silent.
When Ashliegh and Dave came out, strangely there was no excitement or interest evident from Dave as he was now confronted with the sight of the UFO. Her sister was unusually quiet. By this time a few more people were in the street, around seven plus Natalie, her sister and stepfather who stood opposite her at the top of the steps that led down to the street. There were some people down the road to the left, the James family (Duncan and his son) and Mrs Parker to the right, a man who lived to the right, across the road who she called the rose man as he always tended his roses, and some others whom she did not know.
They stood there for about 5 minutes and then Dave said he'd seen enough and went back indoors! Ashley, who normally did not get on with him, nevertheless followed him in, and Natalie remembers that her sister turned in a sort of fluid, automatic movement, which was unusual enough for her to remember it. Natalie told them she would not leave until she sees the object go. For some reason, this was important to her to see it leave. She stayed watching it and mentally asking it questions. She said she actually started to get a bit bored waiting for it moves or do something! She was aware of a pressure sensation in her ears.
It must have been after another 10 minutes that she suddenly had a feeling of bitter disappointment: "I found myself feeling gutted as it had gone! All I could see were the stars. I was very confused because that was my goal to watch it move, but was left there feeling perplexed, dazed....also no one else was on the street, except me." It was now cold and windier, normal for January.
She went back in feeling 'gutted' and Dave asked her jokingly, "Did you see your UFO go?" and her sister didn't discuss it. They did not discuss it with any of the neighbours at all in the days following, which again, was strange.
Natalie explained that the following day she showed her stepfather the Evening Post and there was an article about a Russian satellite out of orbit, which was suggested as a possible explanation of the sightings over Swansea the night before [that South Wales Evening Post article was actually published on the following Monday 24th January 1983]
19 JANUARY 1983 – BAGLAN
6.30 PM
Richard Gravelle was observing the stars through his binoculars, from Baglan in Port Talbot. He observed three sets of bright lights in triangular formation travelling slowly in an easterly direction. He assumed at the time that the lights belonged to an aircraft as some of the lights flashed on and off at regular intervals. He was struck by the absence of noise. As the lights were going over, a shooting star travelling from the north east to south west passed immediately behind the lights.

19 JANUARY 1983 - LLANDAFF
7 PM.
John Griffiths, of Heol Penlan, Whitchurch, Cardiff was on the way home from his work at a communications company, Air Call Ltd in Cathedral Road. Passengers in the car were his wife Carole who works with him, and Dr Nribendra Deb, who practises in Caerphilly.
They saw a huge triangular-shaped object in the sky over the River Taff, close to Llandaff Rowing Club. John stopped the car, and they looked at in amazement. Carole said, "It looked like Concorde taking off but it was stationary in the sky. I normally pooh-pooh things like that, but it had to be a UFO."
She drew a sketch of the object, which shows a triangle with one side shorter than the other two, and had 10 large lights around the sides, with one in the centre. She said that the centre light was red and the outer lights white.
Dr Deb said, "I don't know what I was looking at - I have never seen anything like iot before."
John Griffiths told the South Wales Echo that he had seen a similar object above Pentwyn earlier in the evening.

19 JANUARY 1983 – BISHOPSTON
Between 8 PM and 9 PM
Ken Morse, a telecom engineer was at home in Ridley Way, a lane with houses only on the west side of the road. Ken explains his sighting in his own words:
“At the time of the sighting, our electricity supply was on three phase open wires running the length of the lane and was subject to power outages during windy weather. I have seen the wires blowing about in high winds and sparking on contact, resulting, unsurprisingly, in a power cut.
Events leading up to sighting:
On the night in question, my wife was out and I would have been in charge of putting my then five-year-old daughter and nine-month-old son to bed – though I have no recollection of doing this! Once this was done, I would have settled down to watch television. This is where I’m hazy on the time but I suspect it was between 8 pm and 9 pm.
Part way through the programme I was watching, the power unexpectedly went off. As usual, when this happened, I would look out of our east-north-easterly-facing lounge window, to determine whether this was a local fault in our lane or whether the houses on Oldway across the field were also in darkness. On this occasion, they were.
The weather was clear and dry with no wind, when, looking out of my ground floor window, my attention was immediately drawn to a triangular formation of three bright blue-white “stars” that had just passed over the lane, south of my house, and were moving slowly in a roughly eastward direction.
(See attached simulated photo of what I saw which was produced for this report. The grey area in the top corner is the overhanging guttering of our dormer bungalow).
My initial reaction was that moving so slowly it must be close to commercial aircraft cruising height. I discounted this when I realised that if it was solid it would be absolutely enormous and if it were three separate craft, the lights were far more powerful than those found on any normal aircraft.
I opened the lounge window to see if I could hear anything. As usual, in our lane at night, there was complete silence. I strained to see whether there was a black triangle between the lights but the background sky was so dark it was impossible to tell. I was then hoping it might block out stars as it passed under them but so few stars were visible that night even though it was a clear sky that again I was unable to confirm the existence of a solid body between the lights. It (or they) maintained the formation in a straight line until it disappeared over the tree in the photo in the direction of West Cross and Swansea Docks. In all, I must have watched it for just over a minute but it seemed a lot longer.
The object was first seen at an elevation of about 35 degrees with 90 degrees directly overhead. It was clear they were forming the corners of an equilateral triangle with one light leading point and the other two at the rear. I reiterate I cannot say if it was solid. Ridley Way runs NNW to SSE. The objects were about 40 degrees south of east when first seen. Without another observation from a different location, it is impossible to determine how far the object(s) were along those bearings and therefore the height and distance away at which they (it) were flying.
Observations:
1. The three blue-white lights were equally bright (much brighter than any star or planet), well defined and did not sparkle or flash.
2. There was nothing visible between the lights and thus no black triangle or central light in evidence.
3. There were no other navigation lights (red/green) or any other strobe/rotating beacon lights of any kind to make me think they were commercial or military aircraft.
4. It was completely silent.
5. The relative distance between the lights was maintained until I could no longer see it.
6. The lights did not illuminate anything on the ground or any part of the craft as far as I could see.
7. The lights were still visible as it flew eastward suggesting they were 180-degree lights and not just downward facing spotlights.
8. There was nothing else unusual in my field of view.
9. Transatlantic commercial planes flying over at night at about 35,000 feet and around 500 mph have very faint lights and can be heard.
See Flightradar24.com (REF 3) for altitude information.
Taking all the above into account, it would seem to indicate that what I saw was likely to be a large, low flying, slow moving possibly solid triangular object with a bright light at each corner.
I have observed meteor showers, a comet, faint earth satellites, Iridium satellite flares, and the International Space Station. None of these bears any resemblance to what I saw that night. I have never seen anything in the sky before or since that couldn’t be explained.
The following day, the Evening Post carried some of the witness’ stories of the sightings that occurred that night and one explanation I remember was high altitude refuelling. If what I saw was high altitude refuelling they must have had very long fuel lines because at 35,000 ft I would estimate they must have been over a mile apart! Not to mention having incredibly bright lights (see point 9 above). High altitude refuelling involves a leading tanker plane followed only yards behind by the plane being refuelled. I’m guessing at that height at night it would look like one aircraft and not three separated by a considerable distance.
If the power had not gone off (caused by the object?) I would not have been looking out of the window and would have missed it. I may have been the only person to witness this particular sighting over Bishopston. It appears to be very similar to the recent sighting over the Cwmfelin Club.
19 JANUARY 1983 – SOUTH DOCK, SWANSEA
Evening.
June Thomas, of Pentrechwyth Road, Bonymaen, Swansea, had just finished work as a cleaner at the Viscose plant at South Dock when she saw the mystery objects.
Mrs. Thomas said today she discounted theories put forward by Swansea Coastguards that the lights she saw in the sky were meteorites burning up as they entered the earth’s atmosphere.
“What I saw was two objects, very big objects, moving across the sky slowly and without any noise,” she said. “Call them flying saucers if you will, but they were definitely not planes or meteorites”.

19 JANUARY 1983 – TOWNHILL
Evening:
8 year-old Mark Rayworth was with his mother, sister and friend. It was dark and the street lighting was on. The weather was dry and clear.
They were standing on the footpath at Townhill Road, Graiglwydd Square, opposite the police station, when his mother said, “Look at that,” pointing above their heads. On looking up he saw two equilateral triangular shaped objects above them which he described as massive in size and almost stationary, but very very slowly moving, in the direction of Mumbles. Both objects were black in colour with rounded off corners.
Around the entire lower perimeter of the objects, were flashing lights, all different colours, and just individually flashing on and off randomly. There was one large white light positioned in the centre of their base, which was constantly glowing. They made no sound nor was there any trail left behind them. Their height was estimated to be about 500 feet. They all watched these objects in awe, for some 10 to 15 minutes, and they then had to leave the scene, to visit friends before the objects disappeared from view.Mark immediately believed that the objects were alien to this planet, and says they had a profound effect on his life.

On 31 October 2016 Swansea UFO Network's Steve Drewson and Emlyn Williams met Mike Troake at his home for an interview. Mike explained that they were based in Morriston Police Station, and had gone to visit a member of the public in a house at the top of Maes-yr-Haf [Y Gefnen, which leads off it], Trallwn , and had just come out of the front door, which was at the top of steps, which faces south-west, with good views down the Swansea Valley.
Mike said, "Good God, what the hell is that?"Gethin replied, "It's like two football pitches", to which Mike said, "It's like the whole length of Woodfield Street" [the main street in Morriston].
Mike described it as being rectangular, with flashing blue lights arranged along the sides, and there were two blue triangular lights at the rear - all part of one object, moving slowly towards them from the south-west. It was about a half a mile to a mile away from them in the south-west, moving from the Landore area. It was blocking out the stars behind it. They were looking up at it at an angle of about 45 degrees. There was no sound from the object. When it was roughly over the Winch Wen area, it slowly turned to the left (the object's right) and shot off to the south, towards Swansea Bay.
They heard over their police radio that many reports were coming in from the public, about seeing unidentified objects in the sky. There were a number of calls from the Port Tennant and St. Thomas area.
About two hours later, back at the station, they received a phone call from the RAF at Uxbridge, and were interviewed separately. They were asked the same prepared questions, such as description, size, what did it do, etc.
Later BBC Wales telephoned and asked Mike for an interview, but he declined, fearing that they would be ridiculed.
Mike Troake draws the object that he and DC Gethin James saw
Mike's drawing of the object, with the blue lights on the sides and blue triangles at the rear.

Other witnesses that evening:
Rita Bradley of Finsbury Terrace, Brynmill, Swansea:
“I saw two triangular objects close together with lots of white lights towards Townhill. I could hardly believe it.”
Carol Batcup of Yr Aran, Dunvant, Swansea, said:
“I saw an object bigger than a jumbo jet over Killay, but moving too slowly to be an aircraft. It had flashing lights at the front and back.”
John Owens of St. Catherines Road, Baglan, saw the lights in the sky above Porthcawl.
He said:
“What I saw was about 600 feet from the ground, huge in size and did not jave any engine noise, not like any civil or military aircraft I know. Besides, it was only moving at about 30 mph, far too slow for an aircraft. I cannot really say what it was....it was certainly phenomenal.”
Peter Trotman, of Bryncerdyn Road, Newton, Mumbles, said he was astonished to hear the claim that the sighting was meteorites. And Mr Kenneth Needles, of Verdi Road, Port Talbot, said he was also sure the UFOs were objects of some kind.
Mr Needles, who was in the RAF during the war, said:
“To be honest, I have no idea what the UFOs were, but they can’t have been aircraft.”

19 JANUARY 1983 – CLYDACH
Early evening.
Phil Prevel was walking his dog in Beryl Road, Clydach and looked up into the clear sky to see three lights, one red, and the other two, green, arranged in a triangle, with a dark space between them, over the Mond Nickel Works. He could not see a body to it, but could see no stars in the space either. It seemed to be motionless but was drifting slowly towards Morriston in the south-west.

19 JANUARY 1983 - SWANSEA BAY
Evening.
A 15-year-old boy [wishes to remain anonymous] was with his mother in the back garden of their home in Laburnham Place, Sketty Park Estate, Swansea when they saw several set of lights in triangular formations over Swansea Bay to the south.
"The funny thing is when I saw the lights (triangles) over Swansea Bay they were so insignificant compared to what I had observed years earlier [see Summer 1977 - Olchfa School, Swansea], that I was totally underwhelmed and didn't even realise there was anything out of the ordinary until it was reported on over the next weeks. I recall several sets of lights (just like stars) in perfect triangle formations and moving across the night sky across the bay very slowly and in sync. The sky was clear and I recall it being quite cold. I was not aware of any structure to the lights, could not estimate how big it was nor do I recall them flashing or changing. I have often thought that the lights must have been part of the same objects as they remained constant in gap / distance. There were at least 3 seperate objects (maybe more). I cannot recall why we (myself and mother) were actually in the garden - clearly something would have made us go out to look into the sky in the cold and dark...I didn't realise that the triangles were anything other than aircraft until news articles appeared about them. I don't recall it being late but it was certainly very clear and dark (quite cold too). I would hazard a guess that it was early evening. I really cannot recall why I went into the garden (my mum / neighbour may have called me to look). The house behind us was very close and the lights were very distant and at a high angle because we could see them over the roof (cannot see mumbles or the sea even from upstairs window if that helps). I recall watching them for a while but as said previously, they were nowhere near as interesting as a previous object I had seen and I think I went back into the house without any thought of them being particularly "strange". The lights were going east to west - from Port Talbot direction across the bay towards Mumbles side of the bay. Very, very slow but in a definite and straight line. I can remember being far more interested when they were being reported by people in the following days.'

19 JANUARY 1983 - LLANTWIT MAJOR
Evening.
Joe Tolland, an insurance agent, a former engineer with the RAF with 15 years service, of Ham Lane East, Llantwit Major, was coaching Llantwit Major under 12's football team, stopped the game they were playing to watch a huge triangular-shaped object in the sky. At first he thought what he was seeing was an aeroplane being re-fuelled in mid flight. But he admitted that this operation wasnever done over built-up areas, and two aircraft would create a lot of noise.
"I couldn't fathom out why the lights were so far apart. It was close perhaps 600 - 1000 feet up. It must have been 300 feet across, so it could not be an aircraft. The thing I really don't understand is that it made no noise. The lights were not usual aircraft lights, though it was in the flight path from Rhoose Airport."

Full Description & Details
Hello,
I hope and trust you will find some interest in an extremely close UFO sighting that took place during a famous “flap” in Swansea, in the late 1980’s.
The reason for the inordinate delay in sending you this report is due to the fact that the witness was my father, and he wanted no publicity or attention, as he was a very private and insular person; despite several efforts over the years, my dad would not allow me to share this incident with any “official” or researcher. My father sadly died in April 2012, and so I’ve decided to let you know about his sighting, as I feel the detail may be quite important.
The date of my dad’s sighting is not known, but it can easily be determined, as it was during the same evening that dozens of witnesses saw lights and “triangular” UFO’s across Swansea Bay and The Gower Peninsula. This was very well documented in the local press, and I also remember Police Officers being witnesses too; it was quite a famous “flap” if I remember correctly.
My dad was a driving instructor by profession, and on this particular evening, at approximately 18.15hrs, he was leaving our home to collect and take a pupil on a lesson. As he left the house he suddenly became aware of a black triangular object, approximately the size of a family saloon car, slowly crossing the sky above the house next door.
The object was blacker (or darker) than the evening sky; had a small tube protruding downward from each corner and each tube had a small but bright light at its tip. The object had insufficient height (or depth) to be a manned craft, as it was no more that approximately 18inches high. Any entity controlling the craft from within would have to have been lying flat.
The craft was so low that my dad estimated it was no more than a foot or so above the roof of the house next door. The object travelled at what my dad described as a “slow walking pace,” and made an audible “chugging” sound as it crossed the road toward the houses opposite in a North West to South East direction (and toward Swansea Bay). My dad than stated he braced himself for what he envisaged to be an inevitable crash, as the object was so low it was going to hit the roof of the house opposite our own.
However, this object seemed to adjust its height as necessary and simply skimmed over the roof opposite, missing the ridge tiles by a matter of a few inches. It then seemed to descend back down and below the level of the roof opposite, and out of my dad’s sight. As mentioned earlier, what we have since assumed to be this object (black triangle with lights on each corner), was later seen by many witnesses over the Swansea Bay area, but at a far higher altitude.
In summary, this object was the size of a car but with far less depth. It made a low “chug, chug, chug” sound as it passed overhead, and it moved at a slow walking pace. My dad stated it was definitely a solid, tangible object, and was definitely under intelligent control of some sort.
I spoke to my dad about his sighting a number of times during the last few months of his life, and to his dying day he swore this account is true and real. My dad and I took an interest in the UFO phenomena following this sighting, and my interest remains to this day
Can sighting be explained as any conventional man-made or natural object?
Certainly no explanation we could think of other than military testing of some sort of "drone." In the middle of a well populated city suburb; hardly likely ?????

Other Comments
The reason for the delay in reporting this matter was that my father didn't want any attention as he was a very private and quiet person.

Trimsaran - 1847
E.M. Morgans of Llanelli: "When I was a little girl I heard my grandmother say what a fright she had when she was about 17-years-old. She said she and her friend were walking home about 6 o'clock one night. It was dark. They thought they heard something. They looked back and a ball of fire was the back of them. They ran and the fire ball came faster after them. They came to a pub and ran in crying. They said a fire ball was outside. All the men went out and saw it. It went rolling away. The sound it made was like knocking against tin. The next night the men went out after dark to see if it was to be seen again. What they did see was a very tall man. His hair and waistcoat were shining silver. They said goodnight to him a few times, but he never moved or answered.

Vale of Neath - 1856
Ronald Rhys, who lived in the Vale of Neath, went missing for a week. On his return he had no idea that he been gone as long as that until local people told him. It was then that he recalled the following: He had been returning home after finishing work one night, when he encountered an eerie light ‘that made a whooshing sound’ in a field nearby. He went to investigate the light and on getting closer, found that he was floating. The next thing that he could recall later was of being physically examined by small beings who took blood samples from him. The encounter had caused a physical effect on him, in that it left scars and his skin had turned bright pink and his hair was falling out. Could this have been caused by exposure to radioactivity?

Llanstephan - 17 SEPTEMBER 1889
To the Editor of THE JOURNAL, SIR,-If any of your astronomical readers had been up and about at 3 o'clock on Tuesday morning last, they would have seen a really grand sight, which I myself saw by chance. I happened to be awake at 3.20. on the morning in question, and, looking out of my window, saw what appeared to me to be an enormous ball of fire, which seemed to be very agitated before it settled down, in a few minutes, into a steady glare. The star, or whatever it was, appeared in the north-east; it had none of the appearance of a comet, but still had a kind of forked tail. At about four o'clock it suddenly seemed to divide, and then the whole disappeared in a second, leading the other smaller stars in the field looking ashamed of themselves. I know nothing about astronomy myself, and cannot tell what it was but having had my night rest disturbed (for which I disturbed others in the house), I should at least like to know what had disturbed it. Perhaps some of your readers can enlighten me. I am yours, etc., F. W. C. Llanstephan Vicarage.

The significance of the above sighting - which questions the fact that what F.W.C. saw was a meteor - as it lasted 40 minutes, is this letter in a later edition of the same paper:
Sir. Looking over one of your recent issues I was struck by "F.W.C.'s" account of a strange appearance which he saw in the sky at Llanstephan. Are we to understand that the luminous object was visible in or near the same spot in the heavens for 40 minutes, because if so the phenomenon is worth reporting to scientific headquarters. I trust there may be corroborative evidence forth-coming. Yours, &c., ARTHUR MEE, F.R.A.S. Editor, "Carmarthenshire Notes," Llanelly.

Cardif - 29 march 1905
A STRANGE LIGHT
Mr. Arthur Mee writes: "I have received a number of communications relative to the curious light seen in the sky on the evening of March 29, I did not see the light myself. The evening was a clear one, according to my note-book, and I observed a meteor in the east at 9.15; but was not on the look out at the time of the phenomenon. Moreover, anything seen in the southern sky at Llanishen is interfered with by the glare of Cardiff and the Dowlais Works. The first I heard of the light was from my friend Mr. Gunstone, of Llanishen, who saw the strange beam of light at the time specified in the south-east. He and others watched it for some time, and he was sure it was neither from the works nor a searchlight.
Mr. T. Skeats, of Whitchurch, watched the bond of light for some time, and was much struck by it. Mr. Ansaldo, of Llandaff, writes that on the evening in question about ten o'clock he saw in the south south-east what at first looked like a long cluster of stars obscured by a thin film or mist. It gradually grew brighter and brighter until it looked like an incandescent light, and lasted for about 25 or 30 minutes. Mr. Ansaldo saw several people watching it.
Mr. J. Havard, Peterston-super-Ely, says he and several others saw the light, which looked like an iron bar heated to an orange-coloured glow, suspended vertically. These accounts are explicit but other less on, or referring to other lights or on other dates, are to hand from Mrs. James Thomas, Haverfordwest;
Mr. Jesse Williams the chemist, and Mr. Wm. H. Yeo Talbot-street, Cardiff. I confess I am unable to explain the above phenomenon, and only wish I had seen it for myself. Perhaps some other correspondent can help to clear up the mystery."

Tylorstown - 27 MAY 1905
A doctor from Tylorstown recounted for the SPR enquiry this incident: ‘About 10 pm on Saturday night I was coming home with my wife, when she drew my attention to a bright light over the Libanus Chapel, towards the side of the mountain.
It appeared as a ball of fire about the size of a cheese-plate; it was perfectly fixed. As soon as I saw it I marked its position, in order to be sure that it could not be someone with a light on the road which passes over the mountain, but its position was far enough away from the road.’

Pontycymmer - 19 July 1905
Mr. Beriah Evans writes: - The mysterious lights which were seen in connection with the early missions of the Welsh seeress, Mrs Jones, Egryn, are once more in evidence. Recently the seeress went to South Wales, but even in the crowded Rhondda Valley the lights appear to have been visible as in the quiet seclusion of Merionethshire. Now she has left the Rhondda and commenced a mission in the colliery districts in the Bridgend area, and here again the lights have been repeatedly seen. Stranger still, Mr Evan Roberts, having returned from North Wales and been associated with Mrs Jones in this her latest mission, is now visited by the lights.
The Rev David Hughes, a well-known Welsh minister, who resides at Pontycymmer, Glamorganshire, contributes to the current Genedl newspaper a signed article, in which he gives an account of the combined mission. Mrs Jones addressed a crowd of between 3,000 and 4,000 people in the open air, and when darkness fell the audience proceeded to the Tabernacle Chapel, where Mr Evan Roberts conducted the meeting, which lasted until midnight.
Mr Davies goes on to say:- "We were given to understand that the lights had now visited the neighbourhood, and of this my wife and myself are living witnesses. We each saw the lights about the house where Evan Roberts stays. A little after one o'clock in the morning of Wednesday last my wife and myself saw a strange light similar in appearance to the upper segment of the setting sun, and throwing out sparklets of light from its circumference crossing from side to side of an old quarry where the youths of the place had held nightly prayer meetings for a week, and where, as I subsequently learnt, a prayer meeting was then in progress.
"It soon vanished, and was followed by a ball of fire about the size of a cricket ball, which rose vertically instead of travelling horizontally as had the first seen."Then we saw a bar of light, apparently about nine inches (? in width), climbing the wall of the house where Evan Roberts was then staying. "Our sensations may be better imagined than described; but that which our eyes saw, that do we testify."
The Evening Express of Tuesday 18 July 1905 gives an account of the meeting at Tabernacle Chapel and states that this was held on Monday (which would be 17 July 1905) and states that Evan Roberts will be staying in Pontycymmer for several days. The Wednesday referred to above would have been 19 July 1905.
The Evening Express of 21 July 1905 gives an account of Evan Roberts' meeting which lasted until midnight, but states that the meeting was held at Bethel Chapel in Pontycymmer.

Ynysybwl - 23 July 1905
A group of young people returning from a prayer meeting at Ynysybwl, near Pontypridd, had a remarkable experience. They told local reporters: “There appeared in the heavens a very large and bright ball of fire. It had two brilliant arms which protruded towards the earth. Between these arms appeared lights resembling a cluster of stars, quivering with varying brightness. It lasted for then minutes....”

MARCH 1906 - TREGARON
MYSTERIOUS LIGHTS - EGRYN SEERESS AT TREGARON
Tregaron, which is situated in the heart of Cardiganshire, was visited by Mrs. Jones, the Egryn seeress. She conducted a meeting at Llwynpiod, and all the way from Llwynpiod to Esgerhendy (writes a correspondent) the party were accompanied by a mysterious light, which in some places burst forth into a bright flame.
The next evening she was at Blaenpenal. The meeting here again was full of the revival fervour, and it was ten o'clock before Mrs. Jones was given a chance to address the meeting.
Light was to be seen at Tregaron after the meeting there, and it continued for about three hours. It appeared in the sky right above Gwynfa, where Mrs. Jones is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Evans. Mrs. Jones spends the day-time visiting the poor and the old and sick of the districts which she visits.

15 MAY 1909 - NEWPORT, MONMOUTHSHIRE
G. Beanland and A. V. Day, at the local flour mill, sighted a cigar-shaped object stationary over Newport Bridge, shortkly after 1.00 AM. Searchlights flashed from each end on to the bridge.
After 10 minutes one of the lights went out, and the object flew off towards Stow Hill.

A MYSTERIOUS AIRSHIP SAID TO HAVE BEEN SEEN HOVERING OVER NEWPORT
Victor Day, packer, employed at the Star Flour Mills, Newport, states that whilst he was in company with two other men standing on the railway siding about one o'clock on Saturday morning, he saw what he believed was an airship hovering over Newport Bridge very high in the air.
He was standing on the quay wall near the Star Mills, and had his attention drawn to something in the sky. In his opinion it had the shape of a torpedo, and was then statonary.
There appeared to be two lights out at each end, which flashed across the sky. The airship was clearly outlined against a clear sky, but it was not very light. It appeared in the same position for about ten minutes, and then one of the searchlights suddenly went out.
A minute later the other light gradually grew dimmer, and also disappeared. It appeared to be affected by a slight wind in the direction of Stow Hill, and then went out of sight.

18 MAY 1909 - CAERPHILLY MOUNTAIN
Mr. C. Lethbridge was returning home to Roland Street, Cardiff, via Caerphilly Mountain. He was employed during the summer months as a Punch & Judy man. As he pushed the little cart Mr. Lethbridge was startled to see a cigar-shaped object, about 45 feet in length, lying on the grass adjacent to the mountain road. Two young men, apparently clad in heavy fur coats, worked away at something on the craft. Mr. Lethbridge related his encounter to the Western Mail as follows:
"When I turned the bend at the summit I was surprised to see a long tube-shaped affair on the grass on the roadside, with two men busily engaged with something near by... They attracted my close attention because of their peculiar getup; they appeared to have big heavy fur coats and fur caps fitting tightly over their heads. I was rather frightened, but I continued to go on until I was within twenty yards of them, and then my idea as to their clothing was confirmed.
The noise of my little spring cart seemed to attract them, and when they saw me they jumped up and jabbered furiously to each other in a strange lingo — Welsh or something else; it was certainly not English. They hurriedly collected something off the ground, and then I was really frightened.
The long thing on the ground rose up slowly. I was standing still at the time, quite amazed, and when it was hanging a few feet off the ground the men jumped into a kind of little carriage suspended from it, and gradually the whole affair and the men rose in the air in a zigzag fashion. When they had cleared the telegraph wires that pass over the mountain, two lights like electric lamps shone out, and the thing went higher into the air, and sailed away towards Cardiff."
May 19th, Mr. Lethbridge returned to the landing site, accompanied by a local reporter. The two men discovered clear evidence that something had come to rest on Caerphilly Mountain very recently.
The ground at the landing site had quite obviously been disturbed. Several mysterious items also littered the site. Amongst them, was a small plug on a chain. A red label adhered to the plug, with the following instructions printed on it, in French:
Important notice. This pin is attached to push back the shell from the valve when it is held on its seat; detach the pin and fix it near the tube of the pump at the extremity which fits on the valve.
The inscription also included the word 'obus', which is the French word for an artillery shell. The men also discovered newspaper clippings at the scene, of articles relating to either the German army, or airships. Even more strange, was the presence of scraps of paper "bearing a mass of figures and letters of the alphabet formed in a style distinctly different to that of the average English hand".

19 MAY 1909 - CARDIFF DOCKS
At about 1.20 AM coal trimmers at the Queen Alexandra Dock in Cardiff, W. John, C. Hayman, A. Bradley, C. Harwood and J. Thomas, a signalman named Westlake and Dick Squires, another workman at the dock, and a number of men onboard a ship saw an object in the sky.
The coal trimmers were near the foreshore, when a "swishing" sound overhead attracted their attention. It was too dark to clearly distinguish any object, but the men saw two lights "a kind of flashing searchlight", they explained - which were visible for about three or four minutes, and appeared to be going in the direction of Newport, and then turning towards Weston.
The signalman, Robert Westlake, in a statement said:
"At 1.15 this morning, while attending to my duties signalling trains at King's Junction, Queen Alexandra Dock, I was startled by a weird object flying in the air. In appearance it represented a boat or cigar shape, and was making a whizzing noise. It was lit by two lights which could be plainly seen. It was travelling at a great rate, and was elevated at a distance of half-a-mile, making for eastward."
A number of men working on the steamship 'Arndale' also saw the airship. It came from the direction of Newport, took a curve over the docks, and passed over the Channel towards Weston, being clearly in view for a minute or two before the lights on board were suddenly extinguished.

19 MAY 1909 - BRISTOL CHANNEL OFF MUMBLES
Dusk. A witness whose name is unpublished, reported a sighting to the Western Mail:
OBSERVATIONS FROM MUMBLES HEAD
A Swansea correspondent, who sends us his name and address privately, writes: - "The following observations may be of interest: Last night (Wednesday), being on Mumbles Head at dusk, I observed over the Channel in a S.S.E. direction, two elongated dark objects, apparently about 80 to 100 feet long, moving from N.W. to S.E. at a rapid rate.
After watching them intently for a few minutes I saw four, white flashes in quick succession from the most easterly object, which was immediately answered by three slower flashes from the other. I also distinctly heard three sharp signals, apparently from a bell, answered by two more.
The objects appeared to approach each other, and then disappeared, travelling away from my observation at a considerable speed."

24 MAY 1909 - SWANSEA
A Swansea police-constable has supplied an official statement that he saw distinctly from Port Tennant at 11.30 at night an airship going in a westerly direction at a great speed, with a powerful light.
Police-constable (111) Williams reports that at 11.15 on Monday night, whilst standing at the tram terminus, Port Tennant, in company with a man named Bell, the latter noticed a light moving in the air, and drew the police-constable's attention to it.
After a little while the airship was noticed passing along in a north-westerly direction at a great speed. The light attached to the airship was exceedingly bright, and was located under it.
The airship was at such a height that it was impossible for the observers to give a good description of it, and it passed out of sight.
To make sure they were not mistaken they sought the assistance of Police-constable Johnstone. That officer avers that he saw a bright moving light, but he will not swear that it was an airship.
The incident was reported in the police occurence book.

8 JULY 1909 - NEWPORT, MONMOUTHSHIRE
A month or so ago South Wales was excited over the mysterious appearance and disappearance of a strange object in the heavens. That proved to be the wonderful aerial invention of Dr. Boyd. The secret only came to light a few days ago, proving the veracity of reports published in the "Evening Express".
Now there is a mystery in the air again. Some campers and others at Allt-yr-yn were startled on Thursday night by seeing a cigar-shaped object hovering over the Crindau and Llantarnam districts, where it remained for about half an hour, between nine o'clock and half-past nine. This story was communicated by Mr. W. G. Crawley.

9-10 JULY 1909 - CARDIFF - NEWPORT
11.45 PM.
Miss Isabel Evans, of 43, Diamond-street, Roath, Cardiff, had her attention drawn to a brilliant light. More careful observation revealed to her a "cigar-shaped object with a powerful searchlight attached."
"Really, it was a most powerful light," emphasised Miss Evans in an interview a reporter, "and it was, apparently, playing down on Newport, although it was distinctly over Cardiff, appearing to be just over our heads."
Miss Evans said she called the attention of her mother to the strange sight, and they watched the ship moving about for nearly half an hour. Now and then it would make a violent dart and take a circular tour.
Finally the object disappeared over Newport into the darkness.

9 AUGUST 1909 - MERTHYR MOUNTAIN
ANOTHER AIRSHIP SCARE
WHAT CWMDARE PEOPLE SAW
Three persons in Cwmdare declare that they saw an airship last Monday morning. Mr. Evan John Evans, milk vendor, one of the three persons referred to, was milking his cows in Gamblyn field at 7 o'clock that morning, when he perceived an object descend on the Merthyr moun- tain and rise again very quickly. It was cigar-like in shape, similar to the one seen on Caerphilly mountain. He also saw a person inside, dressed in black. The airship went in the direction of Merthyr. Mr. Evans' son and daughter, who were with him, also testify to seeing it.

3 SEPTEMBER 1909 - PENTRE, RHONDDA
On Friday night, an unusual sight was visible in the sky above Pentre. The appearance of lights at intervals led some prophets to think of the end of the world, while others of a more modern frame of mind thought of aeroplanes and balloons. As yet, no definite information can be obtained as to the cause of the scare.

A SKY PHENOMENON
A correspondent informs us of an extraordinary spectacular effect witnessed on Monday evening. An 'airship' was seen traversing a large area of South Wales. Reports came in from various locations which, if the reported times of the sightings are to be considered accurate, meant that the object was able to cover the distance at high speed.
A letter written by Sara E. Hanmer of Bettisfield, Rogerstone on 23 January and was printed in the 25 January edition of the Western Mail:
Sir, - My sister and I also observed the mysterious airship on Friday evening last, at about six o'clock. It was wobbling considerably over Fox Wood. It seemed to carry a searchlight, which flashed brilliantly at times, and at others was quite obscured it seemed to us. From this we concluded the occupants were in difficulties. It was so close to earth that we could distinctly hear the whirr of the machinery. Eventually it only appeared to be a darker object travelling in a westerly direction. This is the third time we have seen a similar object in the last four or five weeks, but this one was much nearer, and looked an immense object travelling very swiftly.
The Western Mail of Monday 27 January 1913 printed a map showing the probable route that the 'airship' took. This started at Barry. The object was seen above Barry by an observer in Bonvilston, some miles inland. It was next seen above Cardiff by a witness in Roath Park. At about 6 pm it was seen above Newport. Merthyr Tydfil was next, also reportedly seen at about 6 pm. It was seen over Glanamman between 6.30 and 6.45 pm, finally being seen by an observer in Sketty, Swansea.
The newspaper said: '...probable route of the mysterious airship which hovered over South Wales on Friday, January 17, according to the times and places of correspondents who wrote to say they had seen it. The following night an airship was also stated to have been seen over Essex and Surrey.'

18 JANUARY 1913 - UPLANDS, SWANSEA
8 PM
Mr. Marshall, a ship-broker residing in the Upands, informed a "Leader" representative that he could not say with certainty whether the object which he saw at eight o'clock on Saturday evening was an airship or anything else. He observed what he at first took to be a star. The light, however was diffused, and he watched it for some time, observing that it appeared to be moving at a fairly good speed. He went into the house to call the members of the family to see it, and when they came out it had disappeared.

SWANSEA BOY AND A WHIZZING NOISE.
Master Harold Gibbs, son of a superintendent of the estates department under Swansea Corporation, claims to have heard the aeroplane between half-past eight and nine on Saturday evening on the Parade Mayal of the Town Hall Garden City, Swansea. "I was taking the bread home," he said, "when I heard a hooting noise from St. Thomas way, so I stopped and put down the bread. My brother was with me; we stopped to listen to it. We heard it whizzing overhead, and there was a hooter in it, and then it passed over in direction of Sketty. We both looked up, but we couldn't see anything. We could hear the whizzing of the propeller and a sound like a motor-horn. It passed as soon as anything. It went over between Honey's Farm and Sketty."

21 JANUARY 1913 - UPLANDS, SWANSEA
Morning.
Mr H. J. Marshall, of Eaton Crescent, Swansea, stated that he saw either an aeroplane or an aircraft of some kind coming from the direction of Llanelli. It was travelling from west to east at a fairly good speed, and the light was of a peculiar reddish warm colour.

21 JANUARY 1913 - CLYNE VALLEY, SWANSEA
7 PM.
A postman named J. Bowen, of Sketty was going towards the Clyne Colliery when he saw a large bright light hanging over Clyne Woods. He had been reading about the airship only an hour before, and noticing the brilliancy and unsteadiness of the light, he was convinced that he had at last seen it.
Arriving home at No. 2 Harry-street, Sketty about an hour later, he could still see the light, which had moved very little at all. He called out his brother and his next-door neighbours, but they were at first sceptical, saying it was only a star.
Then, as they were gazing at the light, it began to bob about, and finally went out. It re-appeared shortly in a slightly altered position, and was seen to be considerably larger than the brightest star.
Spoken to by a "Leader" representative this morning, J. Bowen said it looked twice as large as Venus.
"Do you think it was a searchlight?" asked the "Leader" man.
"No", said J. Bowen, "it looked like a head-light.
A very bright one and when it went out it died out slowly. It looked as if they put the light out, flew a bit, then lighted it again."
The latter remark was in answer to a suggestion that perhaps the disappearance of the light was caused by the tacking of the airship, which would have put the stern towards the observer.
On these details all the witnesses agreed. Mr. James, of No. 1 Harry-street, describing the light as having a bluish centre throwing off sparks. The only thing lacking in the airship theory of the light is, that, in spite of the exceptional clearness of the atmosphere and the bright moon, no one saw the body of the ship; neither did they hear the propellers, which latter fact could be explained by the fact that they locate the position of the "mystery" as being over Clyne Common - a distance of a couple of miles from their point of observation.
Mr. Bowen went to the top of the hill and once more saw the light, which appeared to have moved considerably in the direction of Tenby; then it slowly died down and disappeared, as on the previous occasion. After he had mentioned the light, he said, several other people said that they had seen lights during the last few nights, but had thought them to be only stars.
[Note: compare this sighting with that of the boys in Kidwelly on the same evening. No time given but it could have been after the Clyne sighting, and it being to the west of Swansea, could have been the same object - bluish centre, sending off sparks. - E.W.]

THE WONDER LIGHT
A Schoolboy on the Sky Mystery.
It is interesting to read what a schoolboy thinks of the mystery in the sky which excited the amazement and inventive powers of explanation of adults throughout South Wales last week.
A Standard VII pupil at Kidwelly Castle Council School who saw the mysterious light many days ago wrote the following bright and intelligent description of it at the request of his schoolmaster, Mr D. O. Jones.
A Mystery.
28 January 1913
Last Tuesday, as I was playing with some friends in Bridge street, my attention was drawn to some curious object, which took the form of a star, and moved slowly to and fro in the sky. A strange thing about the object is that it did not keep its shape for a long time. When my friends and I first saw it, it was a brilliant star situated in a lighted atmosphere, and appeared to be sending out sparks in all directions.
Then it got smaller and smaller until we could only distinguish its bluish centre, which at times went out of sight. It then re-appeared and kept on disappearing and re-appearing for a very long time. After gazing at it for some time we lost sight of it altogether, when it appeared to be going in the direction of Carmarthen.
We then parted, greatly puzzled at the wonder we had seen.

25 JANUARY 1913 - FISHGUARD
8 PM
Sir, - You may be interested to hear that on Saturday last, at about eight p.m., my wife and self saw what we believe to have been the lights of an airship. We were returning from Fishguard to Goodwick by the Priory-road, and saw the lights, which appeared above the high land to the southward of Pen Cae. It moved to the northward at a fairly rapid rate, and we watched it for some minutes when it was hidden by the higher land. While we were observing it the lights varied in grouping, as if the direction were being altered.

1 FEBRUARY 1913 - TONGWYNLAIS
10.50 PM
The flight of an airship near Tongwynlais on Saturday night is stated to have been seen by two men-servants of Colonel Henry Lewis of Greenmeadow. It was at ten minutes to eleven that they observed its movements. The first to see it was a groom. He states that he saw a dark object with a red light at the rear approaching from the direction of Cardiff and following the course of the road. Immediately he called another servant, who states that he also is convinced that it was an airship. Together they watched it for about four or five minutes. After following the road for some distance, its course was turned westwards over Tongwynlais and between Tynant and Radyr, eventually disappearing. It was travelling at a fairly good rate and several hundred feet above the ground, and the light, carried is described as "a big red lamp."

1 FEBRUARY 1913 - NEWPORT, MON.
A Newport resident states that on Saturday night he noticed a moving light over the docks or the river, and for some minutes when first seen it was difficult to tell whether it was a very high land light or a mast-head light. Slowly the light rose, and at the same time gradually travelled in the direction of Cardiff. No sound of engines could be heard, but that was not to be wondered at, seeing that the airship, if it was one, was much too far off. Then suddenly the light disappeared as though the craft was enveloped in a dense cloud.

2 FEBRUARY 1913 - SWANSEA BAY
Whilst on special duty on the Aberavon Beach, Port Talbot, at about 6.30 on Sunday evening, Police-constables Church and Hurley plainly discerned an airship proceeding from a northerly to a south-westerly direction towards Swansea or the Mumbles. Its outline and also its light were clearly made out, and its flight was also followed by a number of people who were on the beach.
Police-constable Church told a Western Mail reporter that there was no possibility of any mistake, as he could see it distinctly, and also heard the action of the machinery. After some minutes it disappeared in some mist in the direction of Swansea. The other officer supported these statements, and declared that he was sure it was not an optical illusion.
The Neath and Swansea police were communicated with to keep a sharp look-out over these localities.

5 FEBRUARY 1913 - AROUND SOUTH WALES
7.30 PM. Cardiff. An 'airship' displaying a bright light was seen hanging over the west of the city. Large crowds soon gathered in the streets. Inside the Western Mail offices, one or two members of the editorial staff went up to the roof for a view of the object. Towards the west hung a bright light amidst the stars, but some cynics decided it was just Venus, and so they descended again.
But many in the streets were still watching. A few minutes later, the Swansea office of the Western Mail telephoned to say that the same occurence was taking place there, with many out, watching a light. So could this indeed have just been the planet Venus?
However at Taffs Well a powerful light was seen in the sky which brought everyone outside to see it. It was described as being bright enough to illuminate the whole area before it disappeared in the direction of Llantrisant.
The light did not travel across the sky but receded into the darkness.
Witnesses in the Llantrisant area reported that a headlight and searchlights were clearly visible. The object seemed to approach from the direction of Cardiff (east of them - so could not have been Venus).
At Llanharry the object is said to have hovered over and around the same spot for about ten minutes. It made descents and ascents, and once came so close to the ground that a number of people declared that they clearly discerned the wings of the machine. It then proceeded in the direction of Swansea.
Witnesses in the Aberdare area heard "something" overhead. Between 7 and 8 o'clock Police Sergeant Evans and a number of other people in Abercynon said that they saw a powerful searchlight, and could distinctly hear a "whizzing noise" as of an air machine. It was travelling at a fast speed in the direction of the upper part of the Aberdare valley. From some parts of that district, similar accounts came to hand.
From Seven Sisters in the Dulais valley, Police Sergeant Morgan and Police-constable Foster, of the Glamorgan County Police saw the light. Its presence was first revealed to PC Foster. He was standing at the rear of the police station when he was startled by the flashing of a brilliant light which shone down right upon him. He described it as a searchlight.
Looking up, he distinctly saw an airship of the dirigible type speeding swiftly at a considerable height in the direction of Swansea, and he watched it for a full twenty minutes, when it disappeared from view. This statement is confirmed by PS Morgan.
Hundreds of people in the Newport area saw a light soon after 7 PM and continued for over two hours, which was assumed to be that of an airship. It was seen distnctly by people in Rogerstone and Risca, who observed that it seemed directly over Foxwood, about 5 miles to the north-east of Newport.
It appeared to have come from the direction of Cardiff (the opposite direction to the progress of the object above). It made turns and sometimes the light would grow dim and almost disappear. Then it would become visible again and seemed to be stationary. The light at times became so bright that it had the appearance of a searchlight.
An 'airship' was seen over Wenvoe and Barry and passengers on the last train from Pontypridd to Barry followed its movements for some time. It moved about at a great height, making rapid progress through the air in an inland direction from Barry (so could not have been Venus).

At about 9.45 pm, George Winterson, of Ashfield Cottage, Crickhowell said, '..my attention was called to an airship sailing in a North-West direction, apparently coming from the South, at a slow speed and not very high, after travelling three or four miles beyond Crickhowell on the West side of the River Usk; in the direction of Brecon it suddenly turned to the left and disappeared.

8 FEBRUARY 1913 - OGMORE-BY-SEA
Mrs Bassett, Little West, Southerndown, wrote to Captain Lindsay, Chief-Constable of Glamorgan, reporting that she saw, '.... out of a west window an airship going over the mouth of the Ogmore River, and bearing to the right. It had a bright red light and was going very fast. There was not any wind; I distinctly saw the shape of it. It was most certainly not Venus. The light disappeared as it was going, and did not reappear.'

16 OCTOBER 1916 - SOUTH-EAST WALES
South-East Wales was on tip-toe on Monday evening between 7 and 8 o'clock gazing excitedly at a luminous shape in the sky, away towards the south-east.
Locally, in common with other districts opinion was divided as to the nature of the apparition, some inclining to the belief that it was the northern lights, others that it was a peculiar light from Dowlais or other works. Very few believed that the mysterious light was an airship.
Major Baird, M.P., of the Air Board, in reply to an enquiry from Mr. C. B. Stanton, M.P., who watched the "light" in his own constituency has informed that gentleman that "There is no doubt that the airship seen over Aberdare and Merthyr was one of ours. You will not ask me where it lives. The main thing is that it is ours."
Mr. Stanton was given authority to make the fact known.

In the House of Commons on Tuesday Mr. J. H. Cory (U., Cardiff), asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he was aware that a British airship's sudden appearance over parts of South Wales on Monday night week, created a good deal of excitement that would have been avoided had any warning been the practice in London; and whether he directed the officials responsible for these flights by British airships to give warning whenever possible of such proposed visits?
Dr. Macnamara: Airships were over South Wales, during Monday, the 16th October but returned to their base in day light. No reports have been received indicating that any alarm was caused.

1935 - FREYSTROP, PEMBROKESHIRE
Warren Davies and his sister were walking home from school one evening to their home in Freystrop, where they lived with their grandparents. They had to cross a field and then a wood on their way, and had been taking this route for some time.
As they neared the end of the wood, they saw a bright yellow object, about the size of a bicycle wheel, which they thought at first was a balloon. It was floating amongst the trees and was moving backwards and forwards like a pendulum, about six feet each way.
The children wer scared and ran home. Although they continued to use the same route to school they were usually accompanied through the wood by their grandfather after this episode.

1947 - 1948 NEATH ABBEY
The witness does not remember the date of his sighting, but occurred between September 1947 and July 1948, this being the academic year.
The witness, Robert, was born in May 1942 and so was 5 years old at the time of his sighting, whilst in school at Neath Abbey Infants School. He remembers walking into the yard, which is located to the south of the front of the school building, with other children at the start of playtime.
He looked up to his right and saw a silver-coloured object, hovering motionless about 100 ft up to the right and slightly back of the school building. It was disc-shaped, the centre of which had 6 or 7 ridges or spokes coming from a central hub, which he described as being like a plane's propeller. The outside edge was like a ring with curved surface.
He does not remember seeing daylight between the 'spokes', due possibly to the fact it was tilted, or because there was a solid surface at a deeper level. So in effect, the object would have been like a silver wheel with thick spokes.
The tilt of the object was about 30-40 degrees off the horizontal, with the bottom surface towards the children, but when describing it he seemed to think it was the top facing them - but if that were the case, it would have been upside down. It did not spin on its axis, made no sound, and remained completely motionless. It size was comparable to two bus-lengths in diameter, so was a large object.
Robert remembers asking the teacher (all the teachers at the school were female), "What is that?", but she just said she didn't know and told the children to go and play, which they did. 15 minutes later, when they all went back in to resume their lessons, the object was still in its original position.
He has no recollection of seeing it after school, so presumably the object had left the area.
It is interesting to consider the reaction of the teacher. It would be understandable to imagine that the adult would not wish to alarm the children, despite a probable feeling of alarm herself. Were there comments back in the staff room? Was it reported to the authorities? It was just after the war, and the latter was probable. This deserves further research.
Robert had never reported it to the authorites, but has often told the story to close family and friends.
Robert wishes to remain unidentified at present, but has said he will make a model in clay to better describe the object.

September 11, 1922
John Morris, steersman of the local lifeboat, and another witness saw what they thought was an aircraft falling, with extraordinary slowness, into the Irish Sea. They took a motorboat out to investigate but found nothing. There was no report immediately afterwards of any terrestrial aircraft having gone missing.
If there were de-bunkers around in the day then they would have surely classed this as a Chinese lantern or maybe because of the location and circumstances, an Irish lantern, being essentially the same thing just a bit slower. Joking apart this may be one of the earliest observations in Britain of USOs in the Irish Sea.
09-09-1922
In the London Daily Express, Sept. 11, 1922, it is said that, upon September 9th, John Morris, coxswain of the Barmouth (Wales) life boat, and William James, looking out at sea from the shore at Barmouth, saw what they thought was an aeroplane falling into the ocean. They rushed out in a motor boat but found nothing. In the Barmouth Advertiser of the 14th, it is said that this object had fallen so slowly that features described as features of an aeroplane had been seen. In newspapers and aeronautical journals of the time, there is no findable record of an aeroplane of this earth reported missing.

"From time to time the west coast of Wales seems to have been the scene of mysterious lights.... And now we have a statement from Towyn that within the last few weeks lights of various colors have been seen moving over the estuary of the Dysynni River, and out to sea. They are generally in a northerly direction, but sometimes they hug the shore, and move at high velocity for miles toward Aberdovey, and suddenly disappear."
The Book of the Damned
In November 2017 I launched an online magazine called Shadows Of Your Mind dedicated the world of Ufology, the paranormal, the unexplained and alternative thinking.
Published, edited, designed and mostly written by myself what follows is one the articles that featured in the launch issue.
David Davies was just your average pupil at Broad Haven Primary School, but on 4th February 1977, while out playing football in the school field, a glint of silver in the nearby trees caught his eye and caused him to stop and watch. He described seeing a cigar shaped craft rising then descending behind some nearby trees. He wasn’t the only one either, other play mates also saw the object but by the time one of them had run in to the school to fetch a teacher, it had gone.
The headmaster at the time, Ralph Llewellyn, sat the children down inside and under exam conditions, asked them to draw what they had seen. Each picture showed a variation of a semi-elliptical craft with a red flashing light on top of a small raised dome, while some pictures even had a silver-suited occupant descending from the craft. Estimates of the size averaged around 45ft long. The story made the national news and even the famous John Craven’s Newsround a popular children’s television programme. Hugh Turnbull of the local Western Telegraph was first on the scene to talk to the pupils along with local vet Randall James Pugh who knew some of the children. They also took a look at the area where the children had said the craft had landed but the ground was extremely muddy and there was no way of distinguishing if anything had landed.
They did notice however that a nearby telegraph pole had been damaged near the top, the metal cross-T-piece bent out of shape. Sceptics claimed that the children had just seen a helicopter or a chrome tanker from the local sewage plant not far from the school, however upon checking the plant said no tankers arrived that day. Turnbull then justified that by remarking that “these are children from a farming background, they know what a tanker looks like.” One of the school teachers, Mrs Morgan, disclosed that she too had seen the craft out of the window followed by a little whirlwind of dust that came across the playground as it ascended.
We got in touch with Peter Paget, author of the book The Welsh Triangle, who spent a lot of time in the area following the incident for further information. He spoke to children at the school in the playing field, 200 yards from where the craft had been spotted. David Davies, Michael Webb, Tudor Jones, Paul Williams, David Ward, Philip Rees and Shaun Garrison all recalled seeing a silvery coloured disc with an occupant holding some sort of camera-sized object. Headmaster Llewellyn told Peter that although personally he was sceptical of such craft himself there was no reason to believe that the children had conspired to produce a “sustained, sophisticated hoax”. As it transpired it wasn’t the only sighting in the area as Peter soon found out.
He’d been told of an incident at Ripperston Farm, near to the Atlantic coast, which was owned by the Coombs family. Pauline Coombs claimed she had been chased by a football-sized object while driving back home one night. A few nights later her and her husband Billy were watching a late night Western on the television when Pauline noticed a silvery glow outside in the dark. At that point the television started to suffer from interference and Billy leapt up from his chair as he saw something outside the window. As the pair stood clinging to each other, both of them were now staring at a huge spacesuited individual a few feet beyond through the window. They described the ‘man’ to Peter as over 7ft tall, clad completely in a one-piece silver aluminium-looking suit, capped by a square, solid-looking helmet fronted by an opaque, black square visor. Coming from the helmet was a thick, dark-coloured pipe which went back over his shoulder. As Pauline and Billy stood there too terrified to move, their farm dog Blackie, who would refuse to go out of the house after the incident, circled his tail and whimpered in a corner of the room.
BOTH OF THEM WERE NOW STARING AT A HUGE SPACESUITED INDIVIDUAL THROUGH THE WINDOW A FEW FEET BEYOND
A few weeks later in May 1977, Pauline related to Peter a further incident. From her kitchen window she had seen a landed UFO in a field towards the coast. It was 400–500 yards away and was resting on a tripod configuration. She estimated the silvery craft size to be about 14–20ft diameter with an antenna sticking out of the top. She reitereated that given her experience with different types of farm vehicles she couldn’t possibly have made a misidentification. A little while after the craft had left and flown out towards the Atlantic, Pauline and her husband inspected the field and discovered a burnt circular mark in the grass. The couples children also had their own experiences in a field near to the beach. On one occasion a large silver-suited figure walked past within 12 feet seemingly unconcerned with their presence. The other instance involved the sighting of three hovering UFOs, the lowest of which dropped a metal ladder, which a figure descended, and a bright red fluorescent ‘box’. After they had flown off the Coombs’ children ran into the field to locate the box without success. The next day blotchy red patches appeared on the arms and legs of the children who had never suffered from alllergies, and often played in the long grassy fields that surrounded their farm.
DUDE, WHERE’S MY COWS?
These incidents also had an effect on the Coombs’ livestock. The two fields where the UFO’s had been sighted were now off limits as far as their herd of Fresians were concerned with the anxious bovine refusing to enter either field and their milk yield was down 15%. One night something truly bizarre occurred at the farm. Billy Coombs was tending to a couple of heifers in the milking complex where the cattle were housed for the night, when he decided to pop back to the house for a quick cup of tea. Around midnight, leaving the shed locked and secure with the gates bolted, Billy made his way up to the farmhouse. As soon as he approached the door he heard the phone ringing and went to answer it. On the other end of the line was an irate neighbouring farmer who was insisting that Billy come down to his farm and retrieve his cows who were eating his crops. Amazed at the accusation Billy informed his neighbour that he’d left the cows all locked and secure in the milking shed less than a minute ago so there was no way they were his cows. His neighbour was equally insistent though so Billy told him to wait while he checked on his herd. When he got there, to his utter amazement, all 158 head of cattle, which he’d left contentedly munching hay, had disappeared! The shed was completely devoid of any signs of life. According to Coombs there is no way, in the time it took him to walk from the shed to the farmhouse, that a whole herd of cows could have negotiated not only a locked gate but also walked to a farm a mile away while negotiating hedges and more shut gates. Returning to the phone, a stunned Billy apologised profusely to his neighbour and rallied his sons to help him herd the cattle back to Ripperston Farm.
WHEN HE RETURNED TO THE MILKING SHED, TO BILLY’S UTTER AMAZEMENT, HIS 158 HEAD OF CATTLE HAD DISAPPEARED!
Ripperston Farm continued to be a hive of unexplained activity throughout the year but they weren’t the only family experiencing something mysterious. Between Broad Haven and Little Haven lies the Haven Fort Hotel which at the time was owned and run by Rose Granville and her family. Their experiences first started in April 1977 when husband Hayden noticed a strange procession of lights over St Brides Bay with some of the hotel guests. “It was just like watching a train in the sky.” he later told Peter Paget.
UFO HAVEN
A few nights later Rose had finished doing her late night checks in the hotel before going to bed around 2.30am. As she walked down the long corridor to the rear of the hotel, the passage was suddenly lit up as day. Rushing to a nearby window Rose was shocked to see a strange craft hovering about 200 yards away lit up underneath by a brilliant white-blue flame. She described the machine as dome-shaped and watched in terrified silence as two huge silver-suited figures emerged wearing a similar dark-tinted visor that the Coombs family had witnessed. These two figures walked a short distance away from the craft and seperated before they both bent down as if looking for something on the ground. Moments later one of them stood and looked in Rose’s direction who then ran to her bedroom to wake her husband. When the couple returned to the window, the craft had gone. A few nights after Rose again witnessed a strange light having locked up for the night. This time she watched as it moved up and down the coast and to and from the nearby Stack Rocks for forty-five minutes or more. The Granvilles experienced many more sightings with one particularly extraordinary event seen concurrently by Pauline Coombs.
Stack Rocks (not be confused with the formation south of Castlemartin about 20 miles away) is a rugged island, owned by Rose Granville at the time, situated half a mile offshore. It’s uninhabited except for local seabirds and the strong currents and heavy swell around the rocks dissuade anyone from venturing out for recreation or exploration. On October 30th, 1977, Pauline Coombs was driving an alternative route back to Ripperston Farm with her mother and other family members so they could appreciate the view across St Brides Bay on the clear autumn afternoon. Without warning a disc-shaped craft, between 40–50 feet, flew over the car and out toward the rocks. In Pauline’s words, after the craft went behind the rocks, “…we saw it reappear, circle the rock and it vanished into the rock between two doors that seemed to slide open!” she continued “We couldn’t believe our eyes. We saw it fly straight into those rocks. We winced, expecting an enormous explosion, but nothing happened.” Pauline later related to Peter Paget how they parked at a vantage point on the clifftop where they all saw the ‘door’ again but this time two silvery figures appeared walking along the edge of the rock, down what appeared to be steps, to examine something near the shoreline before returning back ‘inside’. The craft was no longer visible and Pauline confirmed that these figures were similar to the one that had stood outside of her window. The family were stunned and on their return to Ripperston Farm, Pauline had a telephone call from none other than Rose Granville. Rose told Pauline that she’d been sitting in the lounge at the hotel when her attention had been drawn to sunlight glinting off what happened to be the same craft as it headed to Stack Rocks. Rose had fetched her binoculars and had seen the same figures emerge and make their way down to the water’s edge. Her daughter Francine and husband Hayden also witnessed the pair, amazed as the figures retreated deep into the rocks.
So what exactly was happening out in that remote corner of Wales in the late 1970’s? We’ll never know for sure but the witness testimonies of the Broad Haven Primary School pupils, the Coombs and Granville families as well as host of other credible and respectable residents of the area who were interviewed by Peter Paget and his wife Jane, will ensure that the mystery will always be well recorded. Earlier this year, former pupil David Davies appeared at a 40th Anniversary conference organised by the Swansea UFO Network to talk about that day in the school field. Davies has never sought to make money out of his story and neither have the other children, after all they came from a simple country background and as their headmaster related, had no reason to construct such a complex hoax.
The Welsh Triangle is certainly one of the most intriguing UFO cases from the UK and we asked former MoD UFO investigator Nick Pope whether the Ministry had any information on the Broad Haven sightings. He informed us “I’m aware of the various Broad Haven UFO sightings, and indeed the wider series of sightings and other odd events that occurred at the time in the area — dubbed the Dyfed Triangle. I suspect that multiple factors were at work here and — as a result — there isn’t a single, neat solution to the mystery. Some of the incidents were probably caused by a combination of pranksters and mass hysteria. I know that was the suspicion of my predecessors on the MoD’s UFO project, as can be seen from some of the original MoD documentation, now declassified and released to The National Archives. But some of these documents show that behind the scenes, despite putting out the usual “no defence significance” line, the MoD took this seriously enough to order the military police to undertake a discreet investigation. So I keep an open mind, and don’t entirely rule out other more exotic explanations.”

There have been numerous 'sightings' of UFO in the skies of North Wales over the years.
The UFO crash the at Berwyn Mountains in 1974 has been much reported, but there have been various sightings of Unidentified Flying Objects across North Wales.
Here are just a few which have been reported.
Denbigh Castle - 1974
In the spring of 1964, a woman walking her dog in the grounds of Denbigh Castle reported finding her pet cowering in a beam of light from the sky. When she tried to pick her dog up, her arm was burnt by the light and the animal's hair was singed too. Neither suffered long-term damage.
Denbigh Hospital - 1974,1984,1994
In the summer of 1974, Two women leaving Denbigh Hospital witnessed a round, bright orange light in the sky, which subsequently rocketed away at high speed. Similar occurrences were reported on the Denbigh Moors in 1984 and 1994.
Llandderfel and Llandrillo - 1974
On January 23, 1974, people reported hearing a huge bang, felt earth tremors and saw a brilliant light in the sky above the Berwyn Mountains. Families in the villages of Llandderfel and Llandrillo were settling down to watch TV when an explosion was heard and the ground shook. It measured 3.5 on the Richter scale. As people ran from their homes fearing another tremor, they saw a blaze of light on the mountainside.
A nurse who believed an aircraft had crashed drove to the site and saw a pulsating orange and red glow on the hillside and other lights. Police converged on the area and emergency services were put on standby. Although searches were undertaken, officially nothing was found – leading to claims of a cover-up. In the four decades since there has been a huge debate as to what exactly happened that night, with TV documentaries made and books written on the subject.
Colwyn Bay - 1982
A white fuzzy object was seen in the sky in the early hours of a January day in 1982 by a pupil of Rydal School in Colwyn Bay, who claimed it was a UFO. Alex Brereton, 17, woke up at 1am or 2am when he heard a noise. At first he thought it was an aeroplane, but it sounded more like the noise made by flying saucers in films he said. Looking out of the window he saw "this white rocket that was bright". To make sure he was not "seeing things" Alex put on his glasses. By then the object had stopped moving but it still looked big and there were flashing lights.
Then it went away really quickly and seemed to change shape. "I should have awakened someone I suppose" said Alex. "Only I didn't thing." Commenting on this, amateur astronomer Eric Mills, 35, from Llandulas, said it was the first report he had heard and there were some various possibilities. "The fact that it was moving suggests it might have been a satellite. They are going round the Earth frequently - every few minutes in fact. They are the most frequent cause of sightings.
"Satellites can be very bright and sometimes they turn, so they appear to be flashing. Alex might also have seen Venus which is still reasonable high in the sky and is very bright. A lot of people see it and imagine all sorts of things. "Or it could be a meteor which comes from outer space and gives a lot of light as it dives into the Earth's atmosphere. But Mr Mills added: "I think if there had been any visitors they would have let us know they were around. If they are intelligent enough to travel so far they would be equally intelligent to communicate with us, apart from flashing lights."
Glan Conwy - 1983
'The sky was lit up by a huge "H" formation, which proceeded to throw out smaller balls of light'
Oval balls of amber light were spotted over Glan Conwy in the summer of 1983 when the sky was lit up by a huge "H" formation, which proceeded to throw out smaller balls of light. After this stopped, the "H" seemed to fold in on itself and vanish. The Welsh Federation of Independent Ufologists believe this incident is connected to a "UFO flap" in the Clwydian Range, Prestatyn, Meliden and Dyserth areas between December 1985 and 1986.
Llandudno - 1991
A close encounter with a visitor from outer space surprised a Llandudno mechanic back in July 1991 when it sped over his car while he was driving on the A55 coast road late at night. Geoff Shotter, 24, was returning from St Asaph when he saw what he described as "a round object with flames coming off it" pass over him at speed before disappearing over the sea. "It was big, very big and unbelievably low - just amazing to watch with a tail of flame."
Mr Shotter, who had three friends travelling with him at the time, thought they were the only persons to see what he assumes was a meteorite - but his claims are backed up by coastguards. A spokesman said: "We were flooded with calls between Fishguard and Liverpool. "Bright lights out to sea were being reported everywhere and people assumed they were distress flares. Secretary of Aberconwy Astronomical Society, Richard Hopkins said that meteor showers are expected at this time of year. "However, it is unusual to see a ball of fire as meteorites usually look like fireworks as they hit the atmosphere" he added.
Wales - 1992
'I'm not surprised some people thought it was a UFO about to land'
In August 1992, a strange blue light which sped across the entire length of Wales baffled the experts. Some say it was a meteor shower, others are firm believers that was a UFO. Members of the Aberconwy Astronomical Society (AAS) were eager to hear from eye witnesses to help collate information. "There were sightings from South Wales up to Anglesey" said Eddie Watson-Jones.
"One person, who was night fishing, said a brilliant blue light came shooting out of a cloud and the slowly headed north." The RAF say it was not an aircraft. The AAS, who met in Mostyn Street, Llandudno, were asked by the British Astronomical Association to gather as much information as possible. The blue light was seen at approximately 11pm on one Sunday evening.
A local fisherman, John Povah, from Rhos Point, saw it passing over Colwyn Bay and Llandudno around 11pm. "Usually when you see a shooting star it only lasts for a moment but this was incredibly bright" he said. "It really lit up the whole sky as it streaked past and lasted for quite a few seconds. "I'm not surprised some people thought it was a UFO about to land."
Llanrhos Road - 1994
Aliens could have been behind savage attacks on sheep claimed a UFO researcher in November 1994. She believed extra-terrestrial "entities" may be conducting genetic research by taking organs from animals slaughtered on farms in Aberconwy. Joan Amof, the co-ordinator for a Plymouth-based UFO research group, read about the unexplained attacks when a fellow researcher sent her copies of the North Wales Weekly News.
And she believed they were linked to a spate of cases in the US, Canada and the UK in which domestic animals were found mutilated. "In America, UFOs - and entities - have been seen in the areas where they attacks happened" claimed Mrs Amof, who lived near Tavistock in Devon. She added that a Clwyd researcher claimed to have seen a "bright light travelling slowly beneath cloud level" in the week of the most recent attack.
In October 1994, five sheep belonging to a Henryd farmer were found with throats and bellies cut. That came just a week after an incident in which a farmer in Llanrhos Road discovered two sheep with their heads and forelegs missing, sparking fears of a satanic ritual.
Little Orme - Llandudno - 1997
In November 1997, a family driving at night in their car in the Little Orme area of Llandudno said they lost hours from their memories after their vehicle was engulfed by a purple, triangular craft. The male driver later had trouble with his teeth and when visiting his dentist, a small unidentified black object fell out of his mouth., despite him never having fillings. The family were reportedly visited by air force personnel and told not to speak out about the incident.
Abergele - 1998
In August 1998, a retired policeman was baffled by white lights he spotted in the sky. The Abergele man, who asked not to be named, first saw the fragmented lights drifting above the town one Friday night and says there was a repeat performance the next day and again the following Monday when he claimed the sky was lit up for about 10 minutes. "I thought it was an alien ship coming down" he said. "It was a most peculiar phenomenon which did not seem to be coming from the ground." He added that he would be interested to hear via the newspaper whether or not anyone else had seen the lights.
Other UFO sightings:
Previously The UFO Investigations and Research Unit, based in Shrewsbury, have turned their attentions to Anglesey and in particular Puffin Island in their quest to gather information on extraterrestrial phenomena
In January, 1974, a number of people claimed to have seen large, structured objects leaving the sea near the island, and similar sightings have been sporadically reported up to the present day.
The strange experience reported by the wife of a retired Royal Marine who saw a light enter their bedroom one night in 1977 on Llangefni, Anglesey, is also in the files. “It had a ‘skin’ pulsated with energy. Electric lights went out turquoise colour as seen in a gas flame. Inside full of pin-point lights like stars. After a short time – I cannot specify – the light went into exact replay of its entry and out of the window,” she said.
A police officer in Rhuddlan said they saw “a big explosion with an intense white light” in September 2000.
Someone else said they saw a “large black object over Rhyl” in February 2004.
One person euphemistically said they had spotted “an unusual sighting” in Wrexham in October 2008 and left it at that.
Someone in Tywyn in April 2009 said they saw “a big bright orange light” that proceeded to “turn white and then disappeared very quickly” without making a sound.
According to documents released by the National Archive one sighting reported on April 13 2009 said there was a UFO over Moelfre which, in its description, said: “Looked like a Chinese Lantern”.
In August 2014, members of the Aetherius Society climbed more than 3,000 feet up Carnedd Llewelyn, Snowdonia , to access the spiritual energy said to have been charged in the mountain by a cosmic being from another planet.
