2016, October 8: An Extra Child
The following event is something that happened to a personal friend of mine in the state of California, USA, and, as I was watching some of her children on the night of the occurrence, I took the account and drawing the same night. You'll have to forgive me for preserving her privacy.
On October 8, 2016, Mrs. S had spent the day with half her kids at a boating event in the San Francisco area; they were watching the Blue Angels fly, among other cool things. I was babysitting her other kids that day... so when she got home, I immediately made note of what occurred to her as she had driven back.
The group had arrived back to the town of Petaluma around 7:30 PM, after it had become dark. Part of their route through town took them past the Clover Stornetta Dairy building near the north end of Lakeville Highway... and as they crossed over the Petaluma River that runs under the road in that area, Mrs. S saw out of the corner of her eye a child sitting in one of the seats behind her where no one should have been. Assuming her youngest daughter in the car had switched seats while she was driving, Mrs. S turned to tell her to get back in the right seat. Only it wasn't one of her children. And the child wasn't fully there.
All that was directly visible was from about the shoulders up of what she took to be an about three-year-old girl; the rest of the body simply appeared as a shadowy area under the head. She sat like she was just going along for a ride with the other kids. She had a round, cherubic face, and very wispy hair; her eyes were sunken in, dark, and seemingly unseeing... though she did turn her head to look straight at Mrs. S when she was noticed.
A Ghost Child
The small figure appeared to have a patterned shirt or dress visible around the neck and shoulder areas, featuring a repeating pattern of red flowers and blue spots, with a white collar. She was wet, and her shirt and face had "very very green gunk moss" on them, more pronounced to the left side of the face, and there was mud in her hair. Overall, the impression Mrs. S had was that the girl had drowned and been underwater for a very long time.
Now Mrs. S doesn't tend to react to matters like this in a normal way; she's seen too much crap to be unnerved by a straight forward ghostly apparition. Nevertheless, she felt herself develop goosebumps and she could "feel them like they were crawling up" her body. As she attempted to explain to her kids in the car what she was seeing -- and it became clear she was the only one seeing it -- the girl faded away. Her oldest son, sitting in the front passenger seat and seeing the goosebumps on his mother's arm, told her to just pull over and park and get out of the car for a moment because he was worried she wasn't in good enough shape to drive safely... and, later on, she basically agreed with that assessment.
About fifteen minutes later, with Mrs. S home and describing this to me as she sketched the figure above, she thought a little more carefully about what she had seen. Nothing in the clothing on the girl or the style of hair she could see gave a clue as to a time period that the ghostly child might have been associated with in life. Given they had spent the day on the ocean, and that the girl appeared as they were crossing a river implies someone who drowned at one of those two locations... but that's not enough to track much down. So, assuming the girl was in fact a ghost, it's unlikely the identity of the child will ever be known.
Overall, Mrs. S felt the girl was just very, very sad... "her sadness seemed to be a combo of me noticing her and that she was lost and needed to be seen. To be made aware that she was something."

Experiences of a Psychical researcher – Raymond Bayless
A very strange adventure befell both my brother and me when in 1938, in Denver, we had returned to our home one evening and found no one there. My brother went upstairs and I stayed downstairs. Suddenly, for absolutely no reason that I was able to discover, I had an overwhelming impression that something frightful was in the house. So powerful was this feeling that I actually started to run for the back door and, as I was passing the staircase, I almost collided with my brother, who had just dashed wildly down the stairs.
We both ran out of the house through the back door and, when outside, compared notes. It turned out that he too had a horrible feeling that something fearful was in the house and had, as did I, started to run from the building to escape its presence. Again, I have absolutely no explanation to offer.
The occurrence was particularly interesting, inasmuch as my experience was "confirmed" by my brother's similar spontaneous impression.
Other spontaneous happenings have occurred to me, as with many people. Such incidents are certainly common, but I will describe to some extent three "haunting" experiences which I have had the good fortune to encounter. One of the most interesting spontaneous events which I have witnessed occurred in the home of Mrs. Bruce Ogden in Eagle Rock, California.
I must first mention that her home had the neighbourhood reputation of being haunted, and, in fact, when I first moved into the area I was told about the house which was termed the "Haunted House of xxxxxx Drive."
One afternoon at about 5:45 p.m. I was having coffee in a breakfast room with Mrs. Ogden when the distinct sound of the door handle and lock mechanism of the front door was heard in operation as it always sounded when the door was opened. I got to my feet and started to answer the door without the least thought that anything unusual was happening. As I started to walk to the door Mrs. Ogden remarked, "That's only the ghost." These curious words made absolutely no impression upon my mind and, in reality, I thought she was having a bit of fun.
When I arrived at the entrance hallway, I clearly heard the front door shut and the latch mechanism fall into place. Of this there was no doubt. However, to my complete surprise I saw that the door was tightly closed and had never been opened. I reached a position of just a few feet away from the door when I distinctly heard the sound of three footsteps on the carpeted floor walk away from the door toward a stairway. The footsteps were no further than one and one-half yards from me; the hallway was fully lighted; and there was no doubt that an invisible walker had stepped across the area directly in front of me.
Mrs. Ogden afterward told me that these sounds had occurred previously and that was why she had remarked to me, "That's only the ghost." She had been absolutely factual and serious. Other interesting phenomena occurred within this house, including an incident which I "witnessed" that featured an invisible hand which slowly scraped across a window screen directly in front of me. The screen did not bend from any pressure, however. It was early in the evening and I could see the driveway and the adjoining house clearly, and no one who could have, in theory, been responsible for this episode was to be seen. I can not imagine any normal explanation, but the occurrence fits well into the house's pattern of haunting.
Investigating an Allegedly Haunted Japanese Restaurant
Over the course of his life-long career in parapsychology, the late William Roll (the PRF's first research director) had conducted numerous field investigations at various locations which were said to be haunted. One of them was a Japanese restaurant in Georgia, where in the early 1990s, a range of unusual phenomena were reportedly being experienced by the restaurant's staff and its customers (the phenomena have long since ceased to occur). These included: feeling "cold spots" in certain parts of the restaurant, hearing phantom footsteps, observing erratic behavioral displays and malfunctions with the appliances & equipment, and spontaneously sighting ghostly figures.
Initially unable to explain these unusual phenomena occurring in the restaurant, the manager eventually reached out to Roll for help. Collaborating with parapsychologist Michaeleen Maher, he made a deeper inquiry into the phenomena that was briefly profiled in a segment on one of the premiere episodes of the then popular paranormal documentary TV show Sightings. The segment itself can still be viewed via a digitalized video copy of that episode that has been uploaded onto YouTube.
The findings of this investigation may provide some preliminary insight into the ways in which haunt phenomena and "poltergeist" phenomena (the latter are also known as recurrent spontaneous psychokinesis, or RSPK, in parapsychological parlance) may sometimes intersect with each other. Although they appear similar on the surface and may often be confused with one another, parapsychologists have managed to identify certain distinct characteristics between haunts and poltergeists which allow them to be classified as separate phenomena. But occasionally, one does come across cases where the two phenomena seemingly occur in tandem - this Japanese restaurant case would appear to be one of them (another would be the Johnson case, examined previously in our 2017 Halloween blog entry).
An article which takes a look back at the case and its investigation, and which discusses some of its possible implications, is available to view at this link (the article is in Adobe PDF format). About two years ago. my family moved to Bradenton Florida because of my husbands job.We lived in apartment. I never heard of shadow people before until then.I was amazed when I looked up the term on the internet because I did not know what I was dealing with. The first experience happened when my kids and I were watching tv when my kids said look, they pointed to their bedroom doorway in the doorway stood a six foot at least man who was all black he was not alone he was with another shadow person this one was of a child. They just stood there as though they were staring. They had no features except it was shaped as humans that were black, the man had a wide brimmed hat on,I feel the child was agirl.Another incident in the same apartment.
I was sleepin in my daughters bedroom because they felt uncomfortable in there after seeing the shadow people. There was a blind on the window and the street light glowed orange on it at night from the lamp post.I saw a large male figure standing outside of the window as though he was hesitating on what to do.I was thinking a break in or something, well to my suprise this man walked thru the blinds into the bedroom.Yes I said walked right thru the glass windows ,thru the blinds and he was not flesh and blood ,he also was not wearing a hat like the other one.I did let out a little scream and when I did he stopped for a very brief second looked my way and kept right on walking.
I was on the bed when this occured and when I first saw the "burgaler" I did look out the window no one was there and then he came back and walked right in.That one was scary.I had another encounter in my bedroom and this shadow person was standing at the end of the bed when I noticed him he left.Another encounter was when I was cooking dinner in the kitchen my daughter pointed out two smoke billowing see thru shapes in the corner I was annoyed and yelled at them to get out which it did not do immediatly.Another encounter was when I was in bed we were on the second floor I was not dreaming or sleeping or whatever.I had the blinds up the windows up there was a good breeze we lived two miles from the beach anyhow I was looking down into the bushes behind the next building over I saw the largest pair of eyes looking at me and yes every so often it would blink. The bushes were small and low to the ground.I saw no body of human or animal orgins just eyes.TO me that was unerving.I believe it could have been a shadow person in a different form but I do not know.I have not since living there had another encounter with shadow people and do not want to either.
A woman has revealed how she believes her late best friend communicated with her twice from beyond the grave in an eerie story that's difficult to explain away with logic. Laura, from Devon, spoke to BBC Radio 4 podcast Uncanny about how she saw a vision of her friend Anna in a park, moments before learning she had lost her battle with cancer. Six years later, Laura met a medium who repeated Anna's dying words despite never having met either of the two women previously. 'Even though it's my story and it happened to me. I find it such an odd story,' Laura admitted.
Laura, now in her early 40s, met Anna in the early Nineties after leaving home at the age of '15 or 16'. She moved into a shared house with strangers, including Anna, who was then in her 20s. The pair became best friends. 'Anna didn't look like anybody else,' Laura continued. 'She was very Rubenesque and she had clouds of red hair that didn't grow down, it grew out. It seemed to defy gravity. She generally had a cigarette on the go and great big glasses. 'She was the best person I had ever met at that point of my life. She was someone who would always look out for me. Make sure that the worst didn't happen to me.'
Three years after they met, Anna, then in her early 30s and already a cancer survivor, found a lump. 'She had it checked out and the cancer was back,' Laura said. Anna received treatment and spent time in a hospice but was sent home for her final days. Laura, by then living apart from Anna, went to visit shortly before her death. 'She was in bed and she was hooked up to morphine for pain relief but she asked me to pass her a cigarette,' Laura recalled. 'We chatted, it became time for me to leave and I said "I will see you in a few days, I love you". 'And Anna said, "keep partying Laura Bear". And that was the sort of thing she said all the time. She always called me "Laura Bear". Everybody she was fond of she put "Bear" on the end of their names. So it wasn't an extraordinary thing to say, it was an Anna thing to say. That was our last exchange.'
Days later Laura was walking home from work through a park when she had her first paranormal experience. 'I finished work, I was walking home, the sun was getting quite low, shining through the trees,' she continued. 'It's not a very big park and there's a very steep hill. I looked up to my right and Anna was stood on that hill on a pathway near the trees... She was smoking.' Laura knew logically that her friend was terminally ill in bed, and unable to go out. And yet she was certain it was the figure of Anna she could see on the hill. Laura continued: 'How she was holding the cigarette and she had a way of flicking her hair constantly. I could see the sunlight on her glasses. Anna didn't look like anybody else. It was Anna.' Deciding not to approach the figure, Laura continued to her flat. As she walked in, her phone was ringing. 'I picked it up and it was Anna's dad phoning to say Anna had passed away,' she said. 'Whatever I did see was a visual representation of Anna. Not someone who looked like her. Anna.'
Six years later Laura, by that time a parent in her mid-20s, joined some colleagues at an audience with a medium in a nearby town. The event was held in a hall. The medium came on stage, decked out in costume jewellery, and began to tell members of the audience about the spirits she was 'seeing'. 'I was thinking it's a load of rubbish,' Laura said. 'I'm an atheist. I don't believe there is life after death. If there was, why would your loved ones choose to speak to you in public through a stranger.'
At the end of the night Laura's friends joined a smaller group who had gathered around the medium while she went to scope out the nearest pub. When she came back to hurry her friends along, the medium turned to her with a very specific message. Laura recalled she said: '"I'm really glad you came back because there was a woman with red hair here for you but she told me not to reach out to you during the show because you would have rejected it. But she told me to tell you, "keep partying Laura Bear".'
But the message was 'totally unwelcome'. 'I was absolutely furious. I didn't say anything. I didn't say a word.' She continued: 'I don't know what the explanation is because I don't believe in ghosts, I don't believe in mediums. But I do believe I saw Anna. I don't know what I believe about this medium but I do know that it happened. And I don't believe any of the friends I was with stitched me up.'
